  • iPad for holding pictures

It was my birthday recently, and my wife bought me a iPad I chose the 64gig option without the 3G.
It transpires you can use personal hot spot on your smart-phone to make the phone a WiFi and you can use the internet on the iPad this way, it work fine.

My real aim was to have a place to store and view pictures when out taking pictures, yes I know there are dedicated devices for this but the iPad is so very much more.

The idea works a treat and it handles RAW large files from my 7D, they download to it at an amazing speed. The screen it superb quality and gives a much better idea how good the image is compared with the small camera screen, despite the vastly improved quality of the 7D screen over earlier models.

Simply as many millions of other people have found a great little device.

My phone contract allowed me a free upgrade so out went the HTC and in came an iPhone.

All Mac now from PC, laptop phone.

I use the hotspot facility on my phone (HTC Desire) all the time, so my laptop connects wirelessly to the Internet via the phone.

How do you get your camera images to the iPad as there are no card slots on the iPad?

Aplle make a camera kit, which consists of a adapter for an SD card and USB, a bit pricy but there are third party versions for peanuts on eBay. The USB does not have enough power to support a CF card reader but I down load direct from the camera via the USB, the camera providing the power. SD cards require less power so the SD reader has no problems.

The obvious question is - why couldn't Apple have included USB ports to start with?

I will be getting a tablet for Julia for Christmas, but not an iPad.

because it's apple and they don't want you doing stuff they have no control over.

as far as tablets go, imho, the ipad is still THE one. the sheer volume & quality of apps sets it apart.

before buying, you need to decide why you're buying. check out the relevant app stores and see if what you want it for is covered. i looked at an android based device a while ago. the marketplace was very poor in comparison to the apple store, and installing stuff seemed (from reading user experiences) to be a bit of a mare.

i bought a 2 for al's birthday. she uses it loads - mainly for tv (iplayer, sky etc), email & facebook. it's great for displaying video & photos, but not so great if you want to use it as a portable storage device when on holiday etc. that said, now i know about the cable patrick has mentioned (thanks!), that looks like it'll change ;-)

I experimented last night and it's possible to download your images directly into Lightroom. Lightroom sees the iPad as a drive.
The other way using a Mac computer is through iPhoto. Both methods require the iPad to be connected with the cable. I don't doubt Aperture could Be used as well.
Downloading to a Windows machine is done via Explorer, drag and drop can be used.

There is an application that lets you down load using WiFi, it's called Transfere, 2.99 from the apps store.

I had my doubts about having an iPad but once bought you are hooked.

Further experiments have shown me images can be downloaded via Bridge and even converted (as with Lightroom) to DNG. Bridge sees the device as a camera.

Do you find it complements of replaces your computer? As a laptop user, I'm sightly worried a tablet would make the laptop redundant (bar for photo editing).

Much will depend on your computer habits, I have been using the iPad a lot for emails and enternet browsing. Probably the MacBook is being used less although I shouldn't want to be without it, the iMac is still the tool for working images. Although there will be times out and about when the MacBook will be used for image editing. The apps for the iPad have editing capability but is limited by comparison.
