  • Lens Calibration

Having looked at the Datacolor spyder lens calibration target, I thought I could make one, and as I intend at a later date buying a Canon 7D which has the ability to calibrate individual lenses, it seemed a reasonable experiment.

Well here is my first attempt (picture attached to post) and it seems to work.
All I used was a wooden mitre block, a steel rule, and a Permajet test card plus two drawing pins. A spirit level could quite easily be added.

Hi Patrick, was this inspired by my recent article? :

My conclusion was that the Datacolor Spyder LensCal is a nice bit of kit but that I'd seen quite a few home made solutions - and I can now add yours to the collection!

The main attraction of the LensCal is that it's easy to attach securely to a tripod, it's quite robust and folds flat when not in use. So I would think pros with some budget would go for that and maybe even some clubs and well-heeled enthusiasts, but in the mean time I see no technical disadvantage to home-made solutions like yours.

Indeed I was insired by your article.

Yes the Lenscal proper does look like good kit but its not cheap and most of us would use it very rarly, my solution uses bits and pieces that are around the average household.
