  • Should photographers make a spectacle of themselves?

This is Bob Schmidt, one of the founders of Hoodman, who make all sorts of accessories, like eyecups, LCD screen hoods and viewfinders, etc, and this was recorded at Focus on Imaging yesterday:

    Opinions anyone?

My oh my, how did I ever get by without these for forty years? I got rid of most of my hair so I could slide my glasses on top of my head. Had I known these would be available, I wouldn't have needed to do that.

And is it just me, or does that eyecup on his camera make him look like he's been assimilated by the Borg? Just askin'.

It's extremely easy to poke fun at solutions like this but I can really see some photographers finding a use for this.

Now, the thing is - do you find a close-fitting eyecup like the one demonstrated in the video essential? I used to use something similar in my early days (where's that zimmer frame of mine?!) but not since I started to wear glasses. And you get used to it. But glasses do stop you getting close enough to the viewfinder sometimes.

I, too, am interested in the photoframe.
        I think there can be a bit more improvements;

firstly two hinges instead of one per lens for more robustness,

secondly a good designed knob that is not too big but not too small either so that we do not have to touch the lens when moving

Yes, I don't like the hinge at the top. I wonder of there can be a hinge from the side that can be more easily blended into the frame design.

I am always taking my glasses off and putting them back on and simply cannot believe how easy it is...

I also cannot believe how hard it is to remember where they are, as I cannot put up with them dangling round my neck...

Anything that "cures" this is well worth considering.

Considering the price, and being a bit of a DIYist...

only worth while if your eyes aren't so knackered that the prescription is outside the adjustment that comes with the camera. waste of time for me i think.

True. The diopter adjustment only goes to -2 on my pentax k10, while I have -3

yep i can't remember what i am, but "bat, blind, as a" sounds about right.

just checked, right is -3.75, not to mention the other values.

Well, a lot of my friends photographers still wonder how on earth I manage to shoot with manual lenses with such eyesight. But I guess people always find a way to adapt to their shortcomings.
