  • New Backup Regime

We all know the importance of backing up our data, well I hope we all do, its something that cannot be over stressed.

I have been using a Buffalo TerasSation with Raid 5 giving 1.5TB storage for the past 3 years, and although it was extremely effective being Wi-Fi only it was extremely slow with my very large and getting larger image files. The Wi-Fi had its advantages of course.
Well I sold it on eBay last week and have bought a 2TB WD My Book II with Raid 1 set up, using Firewire to connect to the iMac. This gives 1TB of storage using Raid
The iMac has the OS & programs plus general data only stored on the internal HD, and all my images, and Windows 7 partition are on the WD My Book II. The Raid 1 giving me a mirrored backup in an all in the one unit.
Interestingly now its set up it feels snappier than before when using the internal drive for images, particularly the Windows 7 partition. A WD 1TB H/D (matches in design the My Book II) has now been pressed into service as Time Machine backing up the computer itself.
This arrangement appears to work very well indeed, faster and neater as the My Book H/D's are rather smart looking and blend well with the aluminum iMac. I shall later in the year by a second My Book II as I am reaching capacity with only 1TB available to me, yes I could have bought the 4TB giving 2TB's storage in Raid 1 setup, but feel safer spreading things over two units.

So I take it you have an emergency backup in a fire proof safe in the cellar of your shed 100 meters away incase the house burnt down?

Sounds like robust back up and I agree re spreading over two units. Re external (away) from home copy as Ash describes. Every 6 months I send a full external drive to my father.

Super safe or just too cautious? Hopefully too cautious.

      Best regards

Unfortunately such a solution for me if not possible, I have take my chances on such a catastrophe as Ash describes. But no it not too cautious.

          Re: New Backup Regime

I will be upgrading to a 2GB drive for storing my images on my office desktop machine shortly. I will probably invest in a hard drive docking unit for the backup. These enable you to plug in one (some docks accommodate 2 or 4) drive into the dock (via the SATA power and data connectors). In theory you could have any number of bare drives and you just plug them in to the dock when you need them. USB 3.0 seems to be the way to go, although some docks can connect to the PC via eSATA, which is of similar performance, although less flexible as USB 3.0 is also back compatible with USB 2.0. I'll probably review the dock when I get it.

And we've just found out that our local BT exchange is now FTTC-enabled (Fibre to the Cabinet). In theory that means 10Mb/sec upload and 40Mb/sec download, but the estimate for our location is 6Mb/sec upload and 26Mb/sec download - still considerably faster than the 0.6Mb/sec upload and 5Mb/sec download that we have to endure over ADSL here at the office. With a much faster upload speed the usability of cloud storage and backup services like LiveDrive, which I reviewed recently, becomes much more appealing.

What fun - when we upgrade to FTTC our upload speed will be faster than the download speed we currently get

Yes I have a hard drive dock, great for 20 quid, even has built in card reader and usb hub!
For hardcore backup on multiple drives its just the ticket!
