  • Canon 400d or 1000d ?

Hi, I am just starting out and doing some night stuff with a friend.
Am about to buy my first real camera and have been offered two. The 400d and a 1000d. Which one would be best for night shoots ( light painting )?.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks

Both these models are classed as entry level and there isn't a lot to choose between them frankly in terms of capability. However the 400d is a much older model and I believe is discontinued. Its now the 550D which seems to slot into this place. The 550 seems like a much more up to date camera, has a bigger and better res screen, as well as higher ISO capability. It has a higher res sensor (18mp) and the latest processor plus more sophisticated metering.

As for light painting, both cameras appear to have a min shutter speed of 30secs, though there is a full manual mode so you should have no problem

      Thanks Stephen very helpful.

If you look up "pikebubbles" on Flickr you can see some stuff we have done with the light painting.

        Hi Ollyreg,
The excerpts I found below at http://www.photographyblog.com/revie..._eos_1000d.php
explains the relationtionship/comparison between the two models quite well.

In short, 1000d is a 400d with some cosmetic changes. It was introduced in July 2008 as a lower entry model under 450d which itself was the successor to 400d.

If I may say so (but without being afraid of a bit inaccuracy), 1000d is a disguised 400d. 1000d has larger buttons and so on for more comfortable operations.

        ***********
        (excerpts)
"The 1000D inherits features from both the more expensive EOS 450D and the older EOS 400D cameras. It has an almost identical body and control layout to its bigger brother, the EOS 450d, whilst sharing the same 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3.0fps continuous shooting mode (in JPEG) as the EOS 400D."

        ***********
Personally I would like to second Stephen's comment.

The contemporary successor to 400d/1000d is 550d.
This 550d is however no more an entry class model in terms of specifications. Although it is classified in the entry class model, but actually it has much higher potentiality. It's Canon's strategic model to earn market shares. So in that sense it might be a good buy (cost performance is quite high), unless you do want to get a classical dSLR that were introduced three to five years ago.

You might want to check if one or the other has the IS version of the 18-55 kit lens. This is MUCH better than the non-IS version.

Having had the 400D, I'll second all that's been said above (it's now been passed to my son) and in particular about the IS version of the kit lens, which is actually not a bad bit of kit. The difference between the two is quite striking.

Nearly one year on, and I'm still happy with my 550D (5000+ shots on.... although I'm a LOT more picky about what I keep now!)
