  • If you were wondering

I hesitate to do this as I don't want to embarrass Stephen, but you may have noticed he hasn't been online much in the last two weeks. Unfortunately he's had a horrible Christmas and has spent much of it in bed, and very out of sorts.

I understand he's feeling a little better and I hope this is the start of a his recuperation.

    Get well soon Stephen!

      Many thanks Ian.

Yes, I've really been suffering from back, hip and sciatic pain, so much so I couldn't walk and had to spend the best part of a week in bed. Think I'm on the mend now.

There have been a few interesting threads over the holiday period, that I would normally have contributed to. Unfortunately I simply don't seem to have had the inclination, so you can tell how bad I've been

                Ouch, that's horrible for you!

Hopefully you'll be on the up and up from now - but don't overdo things!

...and there I was thinking you were away skiing.

Anne and I were sorry to learn you have been confined over the festivities.

It seems you are now slowly on the mend and we wish you a speedy recovery.

Happy New Year to you amd your family.

You might find it'll help if you get yourself a decent trekking pole. You can use it as a walking aid to help take some of the strain off your back. Trekking Poles are also telescopic so you can adjust the height to suit yourself. They also have a wrist strap so you can loop it over your wrist either when it's opened or telescoped.

I have 2 of them (one in the house and one in the camper) and I use them all the time on all sorts of terrain. I find them invaluable in helping me get about.

There are several designs for Brasher Trekking Poles, usually in Outdoor shops, RSPB reserve shops etc as well as the usual online sources.

Here's a link reviewing the style I use (and prefer).

Thanks Pol, I was actually having to grab onto anything before I took to my bed and could have actually done with a pair of crutches. Last Wed when I went to the docs I had a wheelchair organised in the car boot, but ended up not having to use it

I know that feeling too. Been there, done that myself in the past. I also have a lightweight folding walking frame tucked away - needed that for a short time to help me haul myself from the bed and get back and forth to the bathroom.

Have a look HERE browse and see if there's anything useful then compare prices with other websites. I long since decided I'd use anything and everything that might help. I have all sorts of bit and pieces now - anything that makes things easier both at home and out and about.

Back pain is no joke and it seems there isn't any quick and easy solution. It varies from week to week, or even day to day. One thing I learned the hard way is to look after shoulders, arms, wrists and hands as you need to rely on them more.

                          All the best.

Sorry to hear you've been crook, and hopefully on the mend now. Still awaiting results of my bone scan

Lately I've been struggling to lug around my tripod and gear, so my partner got me the new Lowepro passport sling bag for my birthday a couple of days ago. Although I've yet to try it out, I like the design and it looks like it'll be handy if I'm just carrying a couple of lenses and a body about.

Pols link to the trekking pole was interesting - I used to be able to borrow a Manfrotto monopod cum walking stick, but can't find one online. However, I have found this: http://www.jessops.com/online.store/...6995/show.html - does anyone know of anything similar?
