I have a large number of negatives from before my digital transition and I would love to have a good scanner so I can digitize a few of them. Any recommendations, tips, or info on what to look out for would be appreciated.

Re: Digital film scanner recommendations
I own and have used a Minolta Dimage film and negative scanner for several years now. It uses slide and negative holders for 35mm film and the slides or negatives are held very securely in holders. Basically the holders pass through a tunnel in which they are scanned. The resolution can be set in software and in the highest res are extremely high quality. The bad news is that Minolta are no longer in business but I believe that Canon used to make a similar one so may be worth investigating. In my view these produce far better results than flatbed scanners which provide frames to hols slides/negs.
