    strange one this....

was out photgraphing the perseids when i saw a very bright (i'd guess mag -10), moving orange light in the sky @2238 on 12/10/2010 and again at 2248. its speed & brightness was constant, was silent and remained BELOW the cloud level.

i've created a web page with photos and more details - http://www.devilgas.com/misc/wtf.asp

it was not a satellite. it was not a fireball or part of the perseid meteor shower (what i was photographing at the time). i know this sounds crackpot, but i genuinely have no idea of what it was!

    any suggestions?

    Re: perseids

Do you think it might have been something to do with the Bristol Balloon Fiesta? Could they have been hot air balloons, or maybe those 'Chinese' lantern things?

Here's a link about the Balloon fiesta.
Pilots at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta hope for a turn in the weather after Friday evening's mass ascent is cancelled.

      Re: perseids

came to the conclusion on my way to a meeting this morning that the only logical explanation is that they were large chinese lanterns. a work colleague saw something similar from his location about 25 miles north-ish of me at around the same time.

unlikely to be hot air balloons as i'd very surprised if they have a constant burn of about 3 mins (the approx time it was visible), not change altitude and also for the balloon itself to not be lit up and easily visible.
