  • Always carry a camera!!

Why? So that you do not miss an opportunity to capture something interesting, unusual or newsworthy. whilst out and about.

A few weeks ago I purchased a small pocketable compact camera with just such intentions in mind and have religiously carried it about with me whenever I have gone out if only into town to do a bit of shopping - until this morning when we were setting out to our local Sainsbury's to do our weekend shop and I thought 'There won't be anything interesting to capture.' and you've guessed it I did not take camera.

Well - when we arrived at the store it was heaving with policemen and police cars, half of the carpark was sealed off and there was a massive mechanical digger embedded in the wall of Sainsbury's where the cash machines had been. Apparently at 6am the thieves had calmly driven the digger (which was probably stolen) down the main highway to do their dirty work.

Oh how I wished I had taken the camera.

I always carry my little Panny Lumix in my handbag and it came in useful when a woman backed into our car in Sainsbury's Car Park and would not exchange details. She said it was not necessary as it was a private car park.

I took a photo of her car and number plate for reference as she drove away.

Alternatively you could carry a small photostudio in your backpack all year and lead a very boring life with absolutely nothing exciting happening around you. A bit like taking your brolly out with you - always stops the rain.

I would have thought that it didn't matter where the damage was caused - if you damage someone else's property then you should be liable to compensate for that damage.

Did you manage to get anywhere in this case?

I was there yesterday evening (Dennis lives not far from us) and the space where the cash machines live has been boarded over and it's still taped off, but the digger's bucket is still there - but no sign of the digger itself. I'm going back later and will ask if the robbers were successful!

                  Re: Always carry a camera!!

Hi Ian - At 10am when we arrived the police were supervising the diigger being winched on to a low-loader. There was also a burnt out small builder's flat-backed lorry had already been load onto another recovery lorry. No one seemed to know if the thieves actually got away with any money - perhaps we will get more information when the Hemel Gazette publishes mid-week. ?

Stephen - No I do not own a mobile with a camera - I have not much need for a mobile but I do own a rather old mobile which I make use of for the odd occasion when required. !!

You can read more about it HERE, Dennis. It seems they probably left empty handed but set fire to the vehicles before they cleared off.

Almost all the UK Regionals have websites and there's a full list of their links available at on the 'holdthefrontpage' website HERE.

Almost all of them do daily updates, especially if something very newsworthy had happened in the area then it's all comes together in their weekly printed edition. Sometimes the updates happen 2-3 times a day so it's always worth bookmarking and following each day.
