  • help. someone wants to buy a photo

    Dear All,

I have been contacted via my Pbase gallery site by someone who says there want to buy one of my photographs for a brochure they are doing.

Can someone advise me as to what sort of questions I should be asking. They said "I am very much interested in your "XXXX.jpg" hi-res image for use in a brochure I am creating. Can you tell me your fees/charges at your very earliest convenience please?"

    Err help.

    Best Regards
    Josh

    Hi Josh,
I have no idea since I never intended to sell any of my photos, at least until now. Though if I was you and for showing appreciation to the person that showed preference for my photo, I would give it away for free with the term my nickname to be mentioned under my photo, since I think the extra money from selling just one photo is not going to make any difference in my pocket.

Or with the term to pick the rest of the brochure photos from DPNow user's galleries (also free of charge)

    Regards

    George

Re: help. someone wants to buy a photo

        Thanks George and Stephen.

George I have trying to sell my pictures and have about 200 with Alamy (not many I know) so whilst I do appreciate your comments I will charge as if I can make a few hundred pounds peryear (eventually) then frankly at least it pays for the odd meal out.

Stephen, should I ask how big the distribution will be and then charge accordingly?

        Thanks

Whilst I realise I'm in the business so to speak, there is no way that I would give the image away for nothing. If you do you have gained nothing and devalued your image. If they are not prepared to pay a reasonable amount after asking, then tell em to forget it and you have lost nothing.

If they went to a stock library it would likely cost a lot more, maybe less, for the image they want. But they would definately pay.

Do stock libraries ask this? Generally I would say no. If they wanted exclusive rights then you can ask a lot more though.

Well good luck, and remember you have lost nothing if they don't go for it, if you give it away, you have lost something.

                  Josh,

If this is the case, then there is no doubt of giving your photos away by charging the correspondent amount.
The way you wrote, I understood (obviously mistakenly) that someone appeared out of the blue asking for selling to him a specific photo.

                    No worries george,

as it happens whilst i have pictures with Alamy this request did come out of the blue from my Pbase site. So you were right and wrong at the same time.

nope. I have started to question the efectiveness of my keywording and my challenge over the Christmas break will be to revisit all of my submissions and have another crack at it.

                        Best Regards

RedEye, the North West photographer's network did a guide to fees, you can download it here:

If you are selling an image you do need to be specific about what rights your are selling – print, web etc. and how often they can use it. I know people who have doubled their payment when someone who had paid for use in a brochure then used the image on a web site.

Anyroad, well done – a nice Xmas bonus!
