  • Observation True or Not

    Hi

As regulars on the forum now know I am the proud owner if a new iMac.

Is this my imagination, when I first set it up for the internet I used a lead to my router and was a little disappointed with the speed particularly when downloading. Well, I have since disconnected the lead and setup Airport the Mac's Wi Fi, it appears to me to be so much faster. I alway's thought Wi Fi to be the slower, is it my imagination or the machine settling in?

hard to say. It depends a lot on the conditions, both at your ISP and and locally. In my case, I started with a DSL set up and found speeds equal both WiFi and cabled. Then I went to a MUCH faster cable connection and WiFi was way slow. I'd suggest a few things. Try a different cable, be sure it's high quality. Is the router new? I think Apple says one brand or another is best, but that shouldn't really make much of a difference. I hope you get it sorted.

And if you haven't already, run, do not walk to the Apple site and download a trial of Aperture 3.0. It's a Photoshop killer.

And welcome to the iMac club; aren't they sweet?

I wan't actually complaining just an observation happy to stick to Wi Fi.

I will give Aperture.3. a go, although its purchase would have to wait.

Still learning my way about but looks good, and they are so beautifully made.

I'm using the Apple Time Capsule as my router and WiFi and regularly get speeds around 19500mB/sec from which I can only assume that the WiFi is as good as anything. However I can't explain why a cable should be any slower

Ethernet speed depends on many variables including the rated speed and length of the cable in use. Your wifi could easily be faster.

              But highly unlikely!

Just run a simple speed test! it will soon tell you which is quicker.

Use Speedtest on all your devices with our free desktop and mobile apps.

if you are going to compare speeds between rj45 & wifi then you need to compare like for like. simplest test of speed is to see how long it takes to transfer a large file LOCALLY between 2 bits of kit on your home network.
doing a test against a website isn't very accurate as too many things will affect speeds - volume of traffic on your ISP. volume of traffic on the destination site. route between your computer and the destination site etc etc. basically, any comparison to a website will need to be averaged over a number of tests with the tests at different times of the day.

settling in will have nothing to do with it (then again, it is apple so you get the belgian beer principle) as you either have a net connection or you don't.

personally, i find that wired connections are faster/more relialbe than wifi, especially so with the ps3.
