    Photo Meet Hatfield Forest May 2014

    Hatfield Forest is well worth a visit at any time of year but is particularly spectacular towards the end of May when thousands, if not billions of buttercups flower in the open meadows with a riot of eye-popping yellow. Ian's other two forums, FTU and Olympus E-System User Group, did this as a group meet several years ago and it's high time we repeated it. I'd like to invite members of this forum too; you do not need an Olympus camera to participate and users of other systems will be warmly welcomed.

    The date is Sunday 25th May and I suggest we meet in the car park at the main entrance at 9.00am.Please list your name in this thread if you are interested and do ask if you have any questions.

    Thanks John. I'll try to make it but may be away that week. 9.00am will be too early but I'll arrange to meet later if I am coming.

        I visited the Forest today and although the buttercups are showing they are someway yet from peaking, so the original date of Sunday 25th May is probably still OK. The National Trust are promoting the "Buttercup Season" in the Forest as late May/early June.

        However, they are unpredicatable flowers and much more of this fine, sunny weather mixed with a few gentle showers could still accelerate their progress.

        So I will leave the date as it is (many people have to plan a trip well in advance anyway) but if it looks like the buttercups are going to peak early I might add another impromptu meeting (probably on Saturday 17th May) for those who can make it at short notice.

          The buttercups seem to thrive on the sun and showers we have been experiencing during the past week and are now really quite advanced. I expect they will still be good on the original date of Sunday 25th May but they may well peak next weekend, although it is hard to predict. I therefore propose to stage the meet on the original date, especially as many of you may have planned specially for it, but also run an alternative day next Saturday, 17th May.

          Anyone wishing to attend both will be very welcome, but it will give others a choice of days and maybe attract a few more members who can't make 25th.

          It will be helpful if those who are interested could indicate which day(s) they are planning to attend. Here is the list of members who have so far expressed interest:-

                  I don't think the show will be over (unless we have a violent hailstorm, for example) but the buttercups may be past their best and getting a bit "leggy."

                  I'm intending to run both dates but many people cannot make the 17th so the main attendance will be on the 25th. So far only Peter H on FTU has indicated that he will join me next Saturday but it's easy for me to do both as the location is on my doorstep.

                        Those Buttercups are fantastic, gorgeous! I actally encourage Buttercups and other wild flowers in an area of our garden - they attract insects and birds as well as looking nice.

                        The cows are fabulous too. They look as though they're posing for a dairy advert, maybe a dairy advertising a product with a buttery sort of name.

                            Just a reminder that I’m hosting a meet at Hatfield Forest tomorrow (17th May) as well as the 25th. The buttercups do appear to be at their best right now but hopefully will still be good next week.

                            Meet in car park at main entrance at 9.00am (I can do earlier if anyone is up for it).

                              I was a bit worried about the heavy rain we had yesterday afternoon and the potential damage to the buttercups, so first thing this morning I paid a flying visit to the Forest to check the situation. I'm afraid the flowers are now past their best and it is clear that they did peak around last weekend, with the heavy rain clearly not helping.

                              However, the good news is that the buttercups are still in pretty good shape and are still present in abundance, certainly well worth a visit.
