  • Wikis - anyone experienced in these

I'm in the process of setting up a wiki on DPNow.

The idea is that it will become a useful repository of knowledge about digital photography. Think if it as a wikipedia for digital photography.

    What do you think?

    Ian,

You can set it up as experimental, say like a trial period and see how things going. Personally I like the idea and I will contribute to it in anyway I possibly can.

Re: Wikis - anyone experienced in these

Hi George, the wiki is already installed but not yet public. We're using WikiMedia, the same software that was developed for WikiPedia.

The philosophy of a wiki is quite interesting as anybody, anonymous or otherwise, can contribute and edit it.

Oh dear, here is a photography wiki that has been open for several weeks and still hasn't received any contributions.

You can't just install the software and expect it to attract content all by itself!

The DPNow wiki already has several dozen photography definitions entered and I'm just building up the pages and the interlinking at the moment.

It should be publicly accessible in a few days.

          Ian,

That's an excellent way in which to establish "FAQ" type information - a resource for new and improving photographers.

One issue about a wiki being open to everyone is where there might disgareement/differing opinions - so you get one set of information one day, overwritten by someone else the next. Might need a monitor for the early days, or try to keep topics off controversial subjects (my camera's better than yours for e.g.).

          Good luck with that.

Re: Wikis - anyone experienced in these

Hello Mark and welcome to DPNow!

I've been thinking about a wiki feature for a long time. We had a private wiki on here some time ago, but it didn't work and suspect the purpose was not right at that time, but the time and purpose are right now.

The wiki will be closely monitored once it goes public. The Editor's decision will be final

If an edit is judged to be incorrect or makes the page less good than it was, its state will be reverted to what it was, previously.

I suspect that editors will be a bit of a rarity at first - it's quite a difficult concept to get your head around!
