  • Another flight in light winds

We travelled to a number of locations today so I could further practise with the Mavic Mini. The only site we found suitable (well almost) out of the winds was in a hillside giving some shelter overlooking the well known White Lion highlighting the area of Whipsnade Zoo.
As the drone moves to its right you can almost see it. I had some odd gusts hitting my back and decided to call it a day. Pleased with the output of this smallish drone as the picture and video all from the unit - except the last I needed a long lens to reach the ending.

I do like a bit of Enya. Good choice.

Considering the winds. Your drone looks to be very stable, Barr1e. Good quality images.

It's actually hailing ice as I type this - not particularly suitable for Droning

I was so impressed by the video quality of Barr1e's Mavic Mini Drone that I ordered one. Today was my first opportunity to give it a good try. Very strong winds kept me from straying too far from the launch point. I'll be a little braver when the winds calm down. Here's a short video showing the mountain where I ski and four automated flying features of the drone. It shoots in 2.7 K video and 12 mp stills.

FIrst of all, here's a still.

Looking very good Pat. I'm very impressed with the image quality. Do you have to pass a test to fly in your country like Barr1e did? I have seen a clone of your drone advertised and the features are unbelievable. Sells for less than half but I question the quality so will wait to see is any reviews materialise .
Regards Ron. Live each day as if it was your last. One day you will be right. Down sized to Nikon s7000 compact camera.

              Hi -

Flying in winds Pat I'm impressed - the little machine does struggle with them. I have only flown four times due to the winds we experienced before we got lockdown.

I recognise where you were videoing from - it must be a favourite of yours.

I like many others with the Mavic Mini are hopeful DJi add 'Follow Me' to the Helix etc. Imagine going down one of your slopes with the mini close behind you. At least we have a great feature with our drone providing you get the settings right Return to Home.

Keep reading the manual - there is much to learn.

I liked your first flight - impressive.

ps There was an update yesterday Pat - it will show when you next fire her up.

Thanks for the feedback. No, we're not required to pass a test. Since the drone weighs less than 250 grams I don't need to register it.

The ski area prohibits drone flying without a permit and proof of insurance. I'm looking into getting the approval. I can understand their reluctance. A drone (much larger model) nearly killed Marcel Hirscher at a World Cup Slalom race a couple of years ago.

Looking at the way that crashed I would think IMO it hit overhead cabling or something similar or as in many cases unprepared of the conditions.

                  Pleased the skier wasn't struck.

                  Keep well.

Thanks for the heads up. I just dowloaded the firmware update.

It was still windy yesterday but I figured I'd fly over the golf course which hasn't opened yet for the season. If the drone went down, it'd be easy to find. I embedded a screen capture of the iPhone display to help learn to control the drone.

I did encounter a High Wind Warning but it flashed too quickly for me to read it (I've slowed down that clip in the video). It was telling me to immediately go to a lower altitude. Instead, I clicked the Return To Home feature which caused it to go even higher! Fortunately it did return. Although it's not shown in this short video, I did go out 1100 feet at a lower altitude with no problem.

                    Almost a hole in one.

Have you tried the CINE mode - it makes for smooth flying and movies.

You will be more expert than me with the amount of effort you putting in.
I'm still grounded until lockdown is removed.

                    Thanks for showing.

I haven't tried the CINE mode yet but hope to soon. Lousy weather including more snow forecast the next few days. Today I got a half mile away with no issues. When I got back to the landing I was fooling around a little bit and tangled with a tree. I thought I had pretty good depth perception but I guess not. 😮 Happily the drone emerged unscathed!

Here's a screenshot from the video

I don't know if you're getting tired of these but I'm having too much fun to stop. This morning I tried the Cine setting but I used editing software to speed up the footage 2 1/2 times. The few cars in our little town don't drive that fast!
