I think you can do most photography with about 3.

One of the exercises given on some photo courses is to go and make pictures with one lens preferably of fixed focal length, try it. It can make for very interesting results.

I wouldn't for one minute suggest owning only one lens (100 may be a bit over the top, not to say expensive, I own a mere 5 plus one 1x4 converter) but none the less going out with only one lens as an exercise can be a valuable one. After all there was a time when us older guys had only a fixed lens 35mm camera with a 50mm lens or in my case a twin lens Rollie with a 75mm fixed lens, over 40 years ago now.

Very interesting site I must say, just read his view on lens testing. Less attention but not dismissive of scientific bench testing and more credence given to using the lens in the field. I agree with that

My post was a little tongue in cheek, Patrick and I tend more to your side of the debate. Thirty years agao when I started taking pictures there was only a 50mm lens to do it with (no cash !). Now I have 5 and a t/c (50mm, 150mm, 12-24, 24-70, 70-200, 1.7x t/c) I am only really looking to add an 85mm prime to the mis and I will be convered for pretty much everything. Of his selection three lenses probably account for 90 % of the pictures I take - 50mm, 150mm and 24-70. Poor old Bjorn must be paralysed everytime he has to choose a lens or, just like the rest of us probably leaves his 50mm on the camera most of the time !

My favorite lens for general use is my 24-70mm f2.8, I don't have any prime lenses.
The 17-35 lives on the IR converted camera, I fined IR images work best using the wide end, aesthetic reasons only, IR just looks good with wide angle images.. That said my 10-20 gives un-sharp results on the IR camera, It also gets a hot spot in the center of the image, there is some technical reason I am told for this. The 17-35 is as sharp as a tack and no hot spot.

The 10-20 on the regular camera is also as sharp as a tack.
