Great assignment Pol. My submission was taken a while ago for a client who has a trendy cafe and a catering business in the centre of Huddersfield. They prepped these little morsels so we could create "fillers" for advertising literature and their website.

Essentially the setup was a plate of glass lit from underneath by a strobe fitted with a large softbox. Illumination from above was identical, although angled (to avoid reflections in the glass) and a stop lower than the one under the glass, mainly to bring out the detail and shine (particularly in the prawns), but also to ensure it didn't overpower the effect of the lower light. The camera used was a 5.4MP Nikon D1x.

Food is one of the very hardest disciplines in commercial photography and while the lighting is critical, it's the styling which makes the difference between the good and the great work. Personally I don't get involved in it unless I have to...

Too true! It's something I've been watching for maybe 3-4 years now, ever since I followed an assignment set by a commercial photographer based in Texas and he belonged to a professional group who specialised in that sort of thing. I've been looking at various 'foodie' brochures ever since and have trying to grab a few 'foodie' shots as and when I can.

The 'Kebab' shot was one of a series I'd taken for a couple of the staff who work in the outlet. I'd taken some personal shots for them to send home to their families, and I'd also taken one or two of the shop and chill cabinet just for good measure. Nothing special really - just something I'd done on a first outing with the new K10D.

I later discovered neither they nor their familes have cameras or PCs therefore they were incredibly excited with the results. So they now have 24 6 x4 prints and a couple of CDs for watching on their TVs, half of those will be sent to their familes in Turkey .. I'm stuffed full of my favourite Chicken Shish Kebab, chips and salad.

Yeah well at least you got to go to all the way Prague to have it. My choccy Muffins (and bananas) came from "Mr Tesco" when he delivered all my other tasty goodies this lunchtime.

You really started something here, a great Idea and subject/assignment, Thank you for the nudge in the right direction, will take your advice, not been well these past two days (Man Flu, on the mend now)so will give me a kick start to get going again. Now where did the wife say the kitchen was?
