  • Assignment - Food

Tinka mentioned hitting a creative brickwall and I'd replied briefly to say I follow assignments and challenges when that happens to me. So I decided to set a small one here.

Not a competition, no time limits - just an ongoing assignment you can add to any time, a personal challenge to take shots of food. I don't have any links to hand on this PC but I suggest you google for links about food photography, look at photos of food and set a personal challenge to aim to shoot photos of food that make your mouth water.

Fresh and uncooked, in the process of cooking, cooked, everday fare, Cordon Bleu - anything that whets the appetitie. The idea is to aim for new shots and set yourself the challenge of learning more about food photography and post more pix as you progress. No hurry - do it at your own pace - just keep the assignment in your 'mental list' of photo ideas.

I'll start the ball rolling with a shot of one of my favourite foods - the chill cabinet of a kebab shop.

This was taken back in 2001 using a little Canon Ixus 300 (2MP) on my way back from a press trip to Japan with Canon. And to think some people travel like this by default!

Wasn't that the time Yoshi asked if you'd eaten the stuff in that yellow bowl -the stuff that looks a bit like pease pudding?

        So did you?

Errrr! I think I ate everything (typically do - it was drummed into me as a child ). The little packet, top left, called natto, is actually quite unpleasant if you aren't used to it. It's fermented beans! Gooey, bitter and smells like rancid socks.

I posted another, wider view, version of this shot and Yoshi noticed I had brought some Japanese photo mags back with me that were in the seat back pocket.

                Ian,

With a little white wine on the side, everything will be ok

This was overlooked so I have added a food category under, for want of a better parent category, still life.

Red wine has more cholesterol-zapping poly-phenols, .... apparently!

The theory explains why high-fat meditteranean diets don't cause a lot of heart disease.

OMG! That looks fantastic! I want some! I'm drooling.

                      Lovely lighting too.

Did you cook it yourself or was it in a restaurant?

At the restaurant Pol (actually tavern, smaller restaurants not so fancy, I've got a photo of it too if you want to get an idea how the tavers look like). 7 Euros (4.5 pounds) per plate.
But we cook it same at home too.

How about you starting a new assignment thread - suggested title could be

                          "Assignment - Tavern"

                          "Assignment - Pub"

                          "Assignment - Restaurant"

                          "Assignment - Architecture"

.. then start it off with a pic of the tavern. That'd be great, I'd love to see a picture of the tavern .... and I'm now inspired to start taking shots of pubs and eateries myself.

I will start a thread but I must think of something that many people have to post something.
For the time being, here is a photo of a tavern. Is the one I ate the calamari very close to home. I have 3 of them around my house in 50-100 meters distance from home.

The quintessential British roast beef. Typical of a Sunday dinner with Yorkshire pudding, seen here on the carvery
