I think that's one of those "Physic Garden" places I visited many many years ago, but can't remember where it is

Not that I'm aware but tbh I've no idea what a 'physic garden' is so I cannot categorically state that it has never been one. It's current role I think is a self catering holiday home, which may be a bit of a help but not much.

Clue time, the building is actually a copy of another one about 10 miles north.

I think the original may be the Worksop Priory Gatehouse, but I haven't been able to track down the copy!

You are correct! But it's the copy I'm looking for...

I should be ashamed of myself. I live 3-4 minutes from the Priory Gatehouse, but did not see the similarity. I can see it now though. It was only last week as I drove past that I looked at the stonework. It is amazing but it doesn't show up so well in the images I have been able to find on the internet. I do have some of my own, but not close ups.

Well, c.10 miles south of Worksop rules out Welbeck, which would have been my first thought, so I'd better look at 18th/19th century gothick gatehouses!

As a further clue, Welbeck Abbey used to be the seat of the Dukes of Portland, one of whom built the building in question.

Thanks for the clue. It's Archway House, Clipstone, the only one of the Duke's proposed 20 identical lodges to be built. It's even indexed under 'Worksop' in Pevsner!

Have I killed the thread, or is this simply too obscure? Should I give the answer and try again with a different shot, or give another clue?

Nobody knows! I reckon another clue is justified though.

Thanks, I'll try to work out another clue. The problem is that the obvious clue is a google give-away!
