Nokia 1020 images

I'm just starting a portfolio of shots taken using the Nokia 1020 smartphone and I have created a dedicated album on the gallery for the purpose at:

Below is the first entry:



This is a 1 image pixel to 1 display (100% unre-sized for web display) crop created by the camera from the original 36.5 megapixel camera JPEG. What this means is that the image above has been re-sampled from the full-resolution original and reduced in size, but completely in-camera by me zooming the display and selecting the view as it filled the frame.



Above is the full image (36.5MP). The crop at the top was what I was looking for when I saw the train stopped in front of me at the station.

It's also shot at 1/50th and of course hand-held, although I do have the optional battery grip which incorporates a tripod socket

Ian,

Ive been looking further into this and all the images really are very detailed, enabling such good crops.

What are the dimensionms of the full images - I realise they're near enough 40 megapixels but I mean what is the ht x width of the file. Could they give you a decent A4 or even A3 print?

So, the 1020 will always record a full resolution image (I don't know if this can be disabled), but if you used the digital zoom then it will record a 2nd file at a lower resolution covering the area you framed. Here are the full resolutions:

4:3 - 7136x5360 pixels

18:9 (widescreen) - 7712x4352 pixels

I think even the 5MP lower resolution files that can be generated will do a very good A4 and possibly A3 print.

Not bad, not bad at all, eh!

I have no use for one but I kinda wish I did because it looks like it could be a lot of fun to own - eg if you're a bored commuter. I can well imagine how useful they could be for out and about news reporters too.

The lens is very sharp and noise is well-suppressed. If I would nit-pick there is some minor fringing or glowing in some details. It's not always there but you can see it, for example, in the bus timetable in the shot of the man and the bus stop.

Why am I always tempted by these toys!

I looked at your full files and crops in the gallery and have to admit I didn't find much to complain about!

I'm not having one though - no way! I'll just envy young'uns who can find a use for one and those who can also cope with daft little screens.

If my memory (sic) serves - as standard you get 32GB onboard storage and O2 customers get 64GB. There is no card slot so you will need to transfer images by USB or wireless connection.

I have been out and about with the Nokia 1020 again:



Marble Arch in London at about 10PM - 1/5th second exposure at ISO 1000, hand held. The image stabilisation really works



Watching train passengers on the platform at Watford Junction.



Perhaps the smartest London cab I have ever seen and look at the licence plate



Embroidery on a garment worn by a mannequin outside a shop in the West End.



This shot tested the Nokia 1020 - it's in direct bright sunshine and the highlights have clearly bleached out. This is a promo girl outside the famous Hamleys toy store in Regent Street.

The "Smart Cab" picture is missing.

The images are a good indication of just how good these things have got (in the hands of a photographer)
