  • One smartphone photo from every month last year

Now that the forum can handle image uploading so much more easily than before, I'm going to trawl through my smartphone shots from the whole of 2019 and post one from each month, starting with - January 2019!

And a bit of night time street photography - well, photographed from the street through the window of a steak house in Amsterdam.

This was only a few days into having the use of the P30 Pro, which I still use as my every day phone. This shot was taken using the '5x' or folded-optic telephoto that Huawei and Leica designed. It's really very impressive.

The colour is a bit on the cool side - but might be close to the reality on that day, which was cold and overcast.

May's choice wasn't very difficult - who could resist the sheer cuteness of this newly-hatched cygnet nestling in its parent's feathers? This was the first of five (correction - not four as previously stated) that have since become fully-grown and are just about shot of their grey adolescent feathers. A very successful brood.

You might also be shocked to know that this scene, the at their nest, was shot just a couple of yards from a very busy road near the centre of Hemel Hempstead!

            June

Daughter No.1 had a surprise birthday dinner arranged by her boyfriend and we I took this on the walk back to the car park from the restaurant close to Kings Cross. It's a modern development of a brown-field site that used to be home to massive gas holders dating back to the 1850s. The buildings are framed by the old gas holder structures and this one was left open and is aptly called Gasholder Park

The details on the swan and cygnet are amazing. I remember the gas holder in Worksop. Very good photos and memories Ian.

All interesting images, but that HuaweiP30 Pro is some tool. The images produced by it are very well detailed. Looking forward to the next 6 images

I must admit I use my phone (a Google Pixel 3a) a lot more than previous phones as the camera is so good.

Not a technically outstanding photograph but one that perhaps was the most fun to capture. This is the same swan family as in the tiny cygnet with parent shot from May They live on the Grand Union Canal that we are very fortunate to liver close to in Apsley/Hemel Hempstead.

I cropped and adjusted this a little in Google Photos before downloading and making into an attachment here.

Or maybe this should have been July's selection?

This was taken using the P30 Pro's '10x' zoom mode, which is a digital magnification of the '5x' folded optics lens. The digital zoom is, I feel, telling on a big screen. It looks fine on the phone and on social media posts.

This was taken very close to the swan's nest and is just 3-4 yards from a very busy road.

I'm pretty sure this individual also perches on my neighbour's roof occasionally in the morning. That's quite a sight!

                        August

Julia and I went down to Falmouth at the end of August to stay with some old friends. This was taken at Helford where we were taking the tiny ferry to one of the small islands in the Helford River estuary. To me it's a shot full of life and activity - very colourful, too. The P30 Pro's fake blur is working overtime here as well!

Wow! I'm having fun discovering some of the new elements of the Pixel camera - my current favourite is "portrait", which blurs the background surprisingly well.

Beginning to run out of months!

I've boosted the colour and used the 'pop' adjustment (presence) in Google Photos for this one.

                          P30 Pro again.
