        When I first viewed the image I thought the material was "bone" but decided that the fracture on the right looked more like a fracture of porcelain or marble. Also, because the protrusions on the left of the object did not look like any "bone knuckle head" I had ever seen, I decided it couldn't bone. But I have run out of ideas and have concluded it may be a a broken piece of marble and the stains are just part of the marble pattern.

              Not wax but this type of material can/has been combined with waxes to make hybrid decorating finishes...:-)

                        It's just a dried plug of PVA wood glue with rust stains from the screw or nail that I'd left in it to try and keep it shut.
