  • Elephant Grass

Whilst at work today I passed this field of impressive grass, well over 2 metres tall

I think the portait shot shows the grass in a better perspective.
    That sky looks threatening !

I like the first one - the dark and broody sky lifts the brightness of the plants - are you sure this is grass? It looks like some kind of crop, maybe bio-fuel?

        Re: Elephant Grass

Hi Ian, i first saw this a few years ago and the farmer told me that this was now big business , it is a grass that is used for bedding for animals, its grown throughout the summer months and left to stand till needed then cut and stored. We did some work for a farmer on a rather large barn for this purpose. Its then sold to zoo's and the like for winter bedding. hence the nickname Elephant Grass.

That's interesting - we have used wood shavings, hempcore (fibres from the stems of hemp plants, and flax fibre-based bedding materials for our rescue hens. We also use barley straw for the nest box. There is another we might try; made from the left overs of rape seed plants. I expect we will get along to elephant grass eventually!
