  • Brighton Xmas Day '09

Hi all. Some pics from Brighton on Xmas day.

Every year, members of the Brighton Swimming Club take to the water in a long standing tradition that stretches back to the 18th century where at least one member has to swim in the sea on Xmas day.

Over the years, this has become extremely popular. This year there must have been a few thousand people there . The most I have seen for some years now, it was like summer!! People come and have a drink on the beach and watch the swimmers go in. Some go in and swim all the way to the end of the pier, others, casual swimmers who just want to do it for fun, just jump in and swim around for a bit!

One of the hotels unofficially 'sponsors' the event giving a towel and dressing gown from the hotel tom each swimmer that reaches the end of the pier. They lay on a bbq too although I didn't see this anywhere this year.

The event starts at 1100 but for reasons beyond my control I didn't get there until quite late after the swimmers had arrived back which explains the lack of pics of them all in the sea!

Anyhow, some other pics like the ones from underneath the pier which you don't see every day that I have included.

This is the scene when we walked up to the beach. Hundreds of people had already made their way home by the time we got there, you can see most heading off now!

    Santas walk on water!

    And get filmed doing so!!

This one of those who had just finished!

    Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

The cafe, it was like summer the amount of people there. Apparently there are two famous people in this picture!

Blimey. I feel cold just looking at the pictures. Love the champagne bottle picture.

Well, I thought it was all a bit odd being on the beach with all those people on Xmas day which is why I included the champagne bottle next to a Tom & Jerry paper cup, on Brighton beach, on Xmas day with people sitting outside a cafe in the sun!!

That picture sums up how I felt about it all really which is the purpose of the thread. Surreal!

I know the pics are not that good to be honest I just wanted to share the moment that happens once a year!

I love Brighton, but have never been down for Christmas.

A great photo story - I also like the champagne bottle, but can't see Nick Cave anywhere around......
