  • E P1 with Panasonic 20mm F1.7 in Brighton

    Dear All,

As some of you may know from my other thread, I spent the day in Brighton yesterday. After a "Flawed" start with my 5D m2, I broke out the olympus E P1 which has become my favoured camera of late especially for family days out.

Up to now I have been using the 14 - 42 kit lens and have been happy with the results. See here for samples of my first couple of weeks with it. http://www.pbase.com/joshbear/e_p1&page=all

A few days ago I picked up the panasonic 20mm F1.7. I chose the panasonic over the olympus 17mm pancake based upon a multitude of positive user reviews. So on Saturday I decided to challenge myself to stick with the 20mm all day and here are a few of the pictures I took.

    Best Regards

    Josh

Some really nice shots Josh, particularly like the last four. There is no denying the lens gives a good result, but did you find the fixed focal length limiting at all, after all the 14-45 will do the same and more

Hi. Thanks for the comments. There were a couple of times on the pier when I thought "I'll just zoom in" but obviously couldn't. Having the fixed focal length did make me think a lot more about my postioning though. Eg the woman on the beach shot from pier where I ran down the pier to get the angle I wanted. I have a a lot I want to do with the 20mm eg make use of its large aperture creatively. I did get a couple of pictures of the kids which do this but not had time to process yet.

What I have noticed is the lens is tack sharp and really inconspicuous. The picture from the coffee shop is a good example.

So after day 1 with the lens I am very happy.

      Best regards

      Josh

Ok, I can understand what you are saying, esp the wide aperture, the 14-42 with its f3.5 can't compete with the 20mm f1.7
