  • Drama in the garden!

The extra snow from last night has forced the birds to find new sources of food this morning and we had none other than a woodpecker on our feeder! Remember, we're in suburban Hemel Hempstead - so this was a real treat and I happened to have a suitably powerful tele lens at home. Here the woodpecker sees off an ever-opportunist starling on the nut feeder:

    More to come

PS taken at ISO 1250! - Oh, and through the kitchen window, too

And this time with the lens braced against the kitchen window, so a couple of metres closer...

Yay - that's great! It's always very exciting when a new visitor starts coming the garden, especially when it's colourful and a bit different from the usual everyday variety.

It also means your feeders have been spotted and probably watched for a while - so there's probably a good chance of an increase in species and numbers coming and going from now on.

          That Woodpecker just looks 'Narky'!!

I like that last picture, it is like he is mouthing something to the others!

            Thanks all!

This woodpecker is by far the most exotic bird we have ever had in our garden

We do have a very bossy robin who chases the blue tits and even the doves and pigeons away from the feeder. But that's about it, apart from a couple of ducks that landed in the garden once

Good pics Ian. I'd be really pleased with those.

We occasionaly have a woodpecker in our garden, but it is usually pecking at the grass and its head moves so quickly that the images are always blurred.

That sounds like the Green Woodpecker

The first shot is a corker Ian. Just caught it right.
The one with your camera right up to the window shows the difference in clarity.

I'm pleased you are at last getting them visit. Now they have found your feeders and found them to be safe I'm sure you'll have lots especially through winter

                    Fingers crossed

Do you think it's a greater or lesser spotted woodpecker?

                      That's the 'Greater'

Easier for you to see the difference if you use google images for both and see them side by side
