  • First snow of winter

This is the view of the garden courtyard through a hallway window outside our office door taken at lunch time today. The snow has finally arrived here in the south of the UK.

We're going to a wedding outside of Loughborough on Sunday - I just hope snow won't complicate things!

Brrrrrrr. Nice pics but I hate snow and all the disruption it causes.

We've had some very cold nights here, snow yesterday that settled only for a short time but I gather we're forecast for some heavy snowfalls today.

As forecast, the snow is falling here in Hemel Hempstead - expect some pix tomorrow!

It was quite mild this morning but the wind picked up after lunch and it was bitterly cold in the back garden when I was sorting out the bedding in the chicken coup. The chooks are all fluffed up and have grown a noticeable amount of extra feathers in just the last couple of months - at the expense of egg production; we haven't had any eggs for around three months!

          Mild? What's that then?

Good to know the chooks are fluffed up and warm. I didn't know hens stopped laying in cold weather - but yours are nice pets anyway.

I'm fascinated to see how the hens will take to the snow. It hasn't settled until tonight and we have a good 3-4 inches already. Hens are actually quite hardy, according to the ex-battery hen experts.

They will be comfortable enough in their coop. They have extra bedding in there tonight and they are locked in until the morning (they do have a window), and they keep each other warm anyway. But just what they will think of the white landscape of the garden will be fascinating!

I'm be looking forward to seeing that.

We've had about 8" overnight and there's nothing moving out there, can't hear any traffic at all on the main road. I doubt that anything could get up our road anyway and I'm certainly not going to try!

I was fascinated watching the foxes overnight. They were coming along from behind the bottom hedge the sticking their noses into the snow directly over the buried tray and eating as usual. The bird feeders are well covered in snow too but the birds are still managing to land on the perches and feed ok.

I'm just uploading a clip at the moment - the hens weren't very impressed!

We've had at least six inches here, but the sun is now shining. It's very quiet here too - nobody is driving and the snow is absorbing the sounds that are there. I've just cleared the bird feeder of snow and there is a robin making its presence known.

                  More a bit later...

I love the expressions on their faces. They look totally bewildered, wondering what the heck's happening.

It's a superb video! Thanks for that.

                            Thanks Pol!

There is another one being uploaded as I type - after they decided to come out (food, you know, it's a drug!).

Actually the first video is technically bad as I forgot that the camera was not set for HD or wide screen, but the next one will be

Nice bright and sunny picture. I was watching a pigeon dragging itself across the back lawn this morning. It was also thigh deep and it's feet still weren't touching the ground.

It's brightened up here now so at least it's looking less bleak.

BTW - your first video looked very good on my screen. Nowt wrong with the quality imo - though I don't do videos and know nothing much about them.
