  • Lost baby blackbird?

I found this youngster, apparently not able to fly, hopping around the bushes in front of our office building this afternoon. There was a female blackbird around, so I thought it might be one of her young, but it does look a lot like a thrush?

It's a Thrush. I imagine the parent will be somewhere nearby - I hope so anyway.

    Nice picci too.

How can you tell its a baby thrush? Baby blackbirds look a lot like this.

The spots on the underside are more prominent on a Thrush. It also has a lighter chest, making the spots more prominent.

Granted it can be difficult to dinstinguish a female blackbird and a thrush but I'm as sure as I can be this one's a Thrush (going by the prominent chest markings) and shape of the beak.

I have not seen a thrush around the office. They are quite rare these days.

I was able to get quite close and used flash as it's quite gloomy this afternoon here. The lens was at 120mm (full frame equivalent).

It's a very nice picture. Obviously taken with help from a flash but what the heck as it's good and clear. Well worth a print for the album.

We have Thrush visiting regularly, always have done. The Blackbirds and Thrush sometimes fight each other for the sultana tray but they all get their share. They watch each other from opposite fences and one moves in as the other moves away.

I still think this one's a Thrush. I think it's a Song thrush (Mistle Thrush are more rare).

Cue Mick Johnson for the definitive answer. C'mon Mick!

I vote for Blackbird, I know they look like thrushes and they usually leave the nest before they can fly, the parents look after them even after they have left the nest. You should check with them!

You're quite right Pol. That is a baby thrush, a sparrow has a finches beak, very strong for cracking seeds etc.

Sadly, "whatever it was" is now an "ex-whatever it was". Found dead this morning by the office door.

Not a good start to a grey Thursday morning :-(

                        Nature can be brutal, eh.

Never nice to see these things happening though.

                          Re: Lost baby blackbird?

                          Definately a thrush.
Pol is correct in saying the lighter chest makes the spots more prominent on a thrush plus a young blackbird is much reddish brown.

Pol, sorry but I somehow missed your c'mon but as you say it's a Songthrush. The easiest way to tell is the arrowhead shaped spots on the breast, the Mistle has rounded spots.

Neither are common round my way anymore although I did photograph a Mistle Thrush in the garden last year. I do get a lot of Fieldfare, Redwings and just the odd Song and Mistle Thrush about this time of year. They all seem to appear at the same time.

I can't recall ever seeing a Mistle Thrush though we get Song Thrush regularly.

We had some excitement today though - we had a Goldcrest visiting. David was up a ladder pruning back the Bird Cherry trees and it came onto a branch to watch him. It was quite close to him too! No photos, neither of us had a camera handy - too intent on safety with the ladders, saws and pruners!

I think I may have seen it a year or so ago but wasn't certain. There was no doubt today though.
