  • Medicine Lake

Medicine Lake in the Jasper National Park, is something of an anomaly because its not really a proper lake, but rather an area where the water of the Maligne river flowing out of Maligne lake, backs up untill it can drain away through the limestone rocks of the area. In spring time when there is much meltwater from the mountains, the lake fills up as the drainage courses back up, then in late summer the level goes down. I realised when looking through my photos of the area that I had pictures which showed this.

This is the northern end of the lake where most water is as it waits to drain through the rocks.

This is the southern end of the lake where all you see is the water flowing into the lake area from Maligne Lake.

And finally this is an aerial shot taken as we flew over the lake.

A stunning set, I bet the feeling you had when you saw these views will stay with you a long time, nice depth of colour in No1 but all excellent in portraying the sense of space

I love that last one! It's fascinating to be able to see those 'blue-blood veins' pouring forth.
