  • Saturday at the Ball Park

    Hi,

I'm a new member as of today and I wanted to try posting a photo. This was taken on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. My wife and I enjoy baseball and attend 10 or 12 games a year. This may change as we will both be retired by the start of next year's season. The shot was taken with an Olympus E-500 with the 14-45mm kit lens.

Hi JT and welcome. That's a beautiful shot of a beautiful ball park. Good rich colours and tones. It really gives a good feel for what it's like to be there. I can almost taste the hot dogs just looking at it.

The only suggestion I have is that it looks like it could be leveled out a bit, seems to be leaning slightly to the right (just to keep a level playing field, you know ). Otherwise, really nice shot. Did you use a polarising filter to get the sky such a deep blue?

Like the way the scoreboard and the skyscrapers on each side have been composed. Nice sharp colours but I would like to see this shot taken from further forward, replacing the curved foreground with audience for one of the players.
Didn't put that very well but I know what I mean.
Like BP say's, it is leaning slightly to the right

        Hi Blank Page and Pops,

Thank you both for the comments. Yes, I did use a polarizer to make the sky color pop.

I reposted the image with some leveling. There's a slight lean to the buildings from perspective issues.

I agree with your comments Pops, and I understand what you're saying. Getting closer to the field and cutting out the crowd would have made a nicer image.

I'm afraid that from a personal point of view I don't agree. I think its a good picture as it is, especially for us from the UK. The Indians are world famous and to see this sort of scene and feel as though you are in the crowd is great. Cropping the crowd out would spoil this for me.

If you have ever been to a Soccer match in the UK especially a Premier League game with one of the great teams, you will know what I mean. Part of the thrill of such games is the atmosphere created by the crowd. A photograph should attempt to capture this.

            Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your comments. I've had the pleasure of traveling to the UK in past years, though it's always been for work. I hope to visit again with my wife and have time to see more of your beautiful country. I did get to see some of London and some of Yorkshire, though that was always through a car window.

Hi Jim, Stephen is a Yorkshireman They are very proud of their county - a bit like Texans in the US

The Yorkshire dales are very much worth a visit though. I'm sure plenty of us would be happy to help you plan a visit - just let us know when you're thinking of coming over.

                  Hi JT,

I just put my carpenter's level on the re-posted pic and yep, it's plumb. (I'm somewhat anal about out-of-level photos because I seem to be incapable of taking a level one. The first thing I have to do in the computer with virutally all my photos is level them.)

Personally, I like the crowd in the shot. That was part of it's appeal for me in the first place. And I'll second Pops' comment about the composition. It's just a very warm, pleasing photograph all around.

                    Hi BP,

I'm normally very careful about things like keeping things level, but I missed it on this one. I see a lot of posted photos that have problems in this area. The straightening and aspect tools are my best friends.
