  • Coffee - With the olympus EP 1

    Dear All,

A family trip to London yesterday. I have given up on taking my 5d out with the family. I just come home frustrated and usually in trouble with the other half. However the EP 1 is a different matter.

It is small enough to be carried all day, doesn't draw attention and best of all doesn't get the "Dad put your camera away" comments from the kids. Oh and I don't get "Those" looks from my other half.

So on with the pictures. Given the lack of lightroom support for EP 1 raw files I am now using raw with large Jpeg and all the pictures below and at the link are Jpegs with a small amount of tweaking. As you will see I'm really loving the art filters and given the raw is saved with the filter not applied, if I don't like the effect at least I have a plain copy to play with.

The best word I can use to sum up the EP 1 is freedom. I feel free to take more pictures at more times. Urmmm I think I'll have to use the canon soon in case I really forget how good it is.

Hope you like the pictures. More here.

    Oh and more to come.

    Best Regards

    Josh

Re: Coffee - With the olympus EP 1

I wonder if our paths may have crossed if you had been in London on Monday? We have a French family staying with us and we took them for a tour around central London, starting at the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, along past HMS Belfast, Hays Wharf, The Globe Theatre, Tate Modern, the Millennium bridge, St Paul's Cathedral, Fleet Street, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Westminster, St.James Park, Buckingham Palace, and, finally, St.James Palace. Phew!

Wow. That's a lot of ground covered. We were there on Sunday. Covered haymarket. Neals yard. Covent garden. The big jessops on new Oxford street and then the apple store on regents street ( I love that shop everything is so shiny and one day will convince me to go down the mac route.)

did you take any pictures ian?

      best regards

We did take a few buses and tube shortcuts, but a lot of walking was done!

I had my E-P1 with me and will post some shots later.

Love these pictures Josh and the others on your pBase site. They do capture something of the feel of a coffee house such as Starbucks. I particularly like the B/W ones, they have a genuine feel of B/W film.

I must say also that I am somewhat envious of you having the EP1. It is a camera I really fancied when it first came out. Basically though I can't justify the purchase of one.

We are off to Canada at the end of the month and it would have been ideal. As things are I'm taking my 1D even though we only get a stingy allowance of 5KG carry on. There is going to be some gear in pockets for the check in and after it will be transferred to the bag

Thanks both. Ian looking forward to seeing your pictures and hearing how you are getting on with the ep1.

Stephen, I am really loving the b&w filter and find coffee shops a great subject matter for this mode. My fav is cafe Nero as it seems more "authentic" than the others. The starbucks picture was taken from a moving taxi at the end of the day. I love the way the pinhole filter dulls the colours a little.

Canada sounds great. It is one of those countries I have always wanted to go to. Is it a photography holiday?

            Best regards

Ian have you any insider knowledge of what lenses are in the pipeline, I would think something like a 40-120 would compliment the 14-42. and that would be pretty much all most photographers would require for such a camera.

Just looking into out how much I could expect to get for my G10.

No, Olympus is being very quiet about its lens plans. Of course there are various adapters for Four Thirds lenses (with electronic linkage) and OM and Leica lenses (manual only). Panasonic has already produced a high quality (but expensive) 7-14 (14-28 equiv.) super wide zoom and a 14-140 (28-280) video-optimised zoom. There is an affordable 45-200 (90-400) Panasonic zoom available (Dennis P has one for his Lumix G1), and a 20mm f/1.7 pancake (40mm equivalent) coming out soon.

                    Hi Stephen -

I don't have a ready answer to this, except to say I think it covers most camera manufacturer's software.
If a request or answer is needed to a question then this link will get an answer.
