  • Olympus E P1

    Dear All

I am new owner of the Olympus E P1. As most of you know I have been a canon user for many years and currently use a 5d mark two which I love. BUT. I wanted a lighter camera for family holidays and general carry around for "normal" days. I had a brief flirtation with the panansonic lx3 and whilst it is the best p and s I have used the quality step between that and the 5d was astronomical.

So when I started to see the coverage of the e p1 my interest grew. One it was a compact dslr and two being a gadget magnet it has that "buy me now" look.

So purchase made and then off on holiday. Read the manual on the plane. Played with every setting. Got there. Googled how to select super fine jpegs. Took some test pictures to download to an epson p3000. Both raw and jpeg show fine btw.

So 2 weeks and a bit later I am back and ready to post some pictures.
All the pictures below and at the link were shot as Jpegs. I did shoot mostly raw as well but at the moment lighroom cannot process them so I will wait as I don't want yet another program bloating my PC.

First the camera I love the look and feel although I admit to missing a view finder. The settings are easy to access. And the weight and size are ideal for a light carry round at all times camera.

So what about IQ. Very happy so far with the Jpegs. I am using the 14-42 lens and it seems sharp and I have had no issues with AF. Apart from shooting continuous using continuous focus (kids on rollercoaster) when the fps really dropped away. However when using single focus on continuous mode the camera captured multiple sharp pictures of shamu.

In summary. I am very happy to have access to a dslr (Yes I know it isn't one) without having to lug the canon across the world. However. When it comes to dedicated photography days, me and my camera. The canon will be in my hand. I love the smoothness of full frame and the high IQ.

Will the E p1 be with me? Oh yes! This thing is so much fun to use. I mean really fun. The art filters especially pop art (see below), pinhole and B&W grainy are fantastic.

This was a family holiday and with young children rightly wanting my attention my photography (I mean none family shots) is put on hold. With the E P1 I had no such issues. It isn't intusive at all. I hope I am making sense. Anyway on with the pics. Here is the link to what I have so far. Remember all shot in Jpg.

I'm struck by the intensity of the colours here.

I think Josh has been using some of the camera's Art Filter modes. One of these, Pop Art, selectively boosts the saturation and intensity of certain colours according to their tone. I think for the first picture he used black and white mode, which produces a high contrast grainy mono look. They are quite fun to use and I personally like pin hole mode, which vignettes the image.

        Hi

Yes Ian is right. All effects here done in camera. The art filters are proving very popular with many E P1 owners because they just work so simply and give great effects. I love the B&W grain and the pinhole one.

Pops, As you may notice from many of my other photographs I love colours with depth and the subject matter presented above caught my eye. The town shots are a place called Celebration which looks very like the place in the movie "The truman show" but with more colour.

The Epcot pictures with the ball benefitted from both a nice sunset and the pop art filter.

        Best regards

Arty filters and gizmos apart I think Josh's ability to turn nothing into something sets him apart as a very skilled and artistic photographer.

          Show us some more Josh!

Thank you for the comment. Much appreciated, Nothing more to show apart from the link below. I am a bit stuck until lightroom is updated to be able to recognise E P1 raw files.

Hopefully it won't be long, Josh. Have you tried the Olympus software?

Hi, No not tried the oympus software. It is not getting good reviews and honestly don't to spend time processing the raw files to then have to do again when lightroom is updated. If you add the fact that my PC is bloated already then I am going to hang on.

                Best regards

Adobe Camera RAW 5.5 is apparently being distributed to a selected few for beta testing, and it supports the E-P1. It can't be long before it becomes a public beta, along with a Lightroom update. Fingers crossed!
