just how tiny the Long Tailed-tit is. The gaps in the container are no more than 1 and a quarter inches wide and around 1 inch high.

It is only when you see photographs like this you realise the size of nature.

Thanks for the pic (very good and sharp) and the information.

Are those fat balls homemade - they look delicious.

    Regards. Barr1e

I can't remember if I ever mentioned it but they finally started coming down into the garden about a year ago, having been tantalising us from high up in the Sycamore for years!

We also had one bobbing up and down from a sill so it could look in and watch us. That was hilarious, exactly like that avatar 'mico' used to have - the one with the bird bobbing up and down.

I must admit I've decided they're not a very photogenic bird or maybe that's because I rarely got any shots I considered worth keeping - so far anyway. They're great fun to watch though - funny little creatures!

Here's a copy of the one I considered to be my best so far and also the only one I've kept so far. It was sometime in March this year iirc and I didn't manage to get a catchlight but at least it came down from the Sycamore so I was grateful for that!

Can't you simply put a catchlight in the eye?

Yes I certainly could fake one but I'd rather have one that was natural.

I save images to do bird and wildlife calendars for my mother-in-law and if I can't get a better LTT picci I'll probably put a 'cheat' catchlight in that one.

I must admit personal satisfaction is the reason. Ok, PS can work wonders but I would know it wasn't real - even if no-one else did.

I've never had much success with butterflies. I've tried before but it never came to much so, inspired by Ian's recent meadow flowers picture, I've just received a large packet of Butterfly border seeds from Meadow Mania.

Barr1e .. those fatballs are far to good to waste on humans

Pol..that a nice shot and well worth keeping. I think its their long tail that makes them difficult to photograph. They are fun to watch though especially when the flock gathers on the same feeder.

Patrick..what on earth are you doing chasing butterflies around the garden . Grab a stool and sit by the side of a butterfly friendly plant. Job done and not half so tiring

Naah, they're tails are ok. It's their diddly-squat heads and tiddly little beaks that earn them the low rating as desirable, photogenic models.

I know, I know, but my wife has planted that many butterfly friendly plants in our garden there is always a better shot over there rather than over here

Anyway here is one of the shots perhaps a few more later.
taken with a 70-200 at the 200 end with an extension tube 400ISO f9 1/640.

That's a beautiful shot, Patrick. Nicely framed, lovely colours throughout and altogether very artistic imho.

About the best of a recent batch of butterfly shots posted IMHO. I'd love to see it as a POTD Patrick, unfortunately it can't be used as its not in the gallery, only an attchment

I agree wholeheartedly with all you say. It's a fabulous picture and definitely one for POTD.

How about putting it in the gallery, Patrick?

It is true to say I have not added to my gallery in a very long time so will be adding this and some other work sometime today.
