A couple of fairly recent shots of a Nuthatch on its favourite peanut feeder.

The shots were taken with a Pentax K20D + the Pentax 300mm F.4.

Nice shot's Pol, of not the easiest bird to capture well.

I've tried a few times to get the classis Nuthatch pose but have failed to get what I wanted.

That's a quality looking feeder too if ever I saw one.

Great ones Pol. The 2nd looks like if you had waited another nanosecond you would have missed it.

I see what y'mean about that second shot but it was one of a run of about a dozen I'd taken as it writhed and wriggled its way up, down and around the feeder.

They often get into that sort of position, only with their heads even more extended and also with their legs more extended and visible. They're capable of some very weird and wonderful positions, fascinating to watch. One of the reasons I liked and kept that second one was because I was pleased with the way colours are shown - ie the way the division between the blue and grey markings were clearly seen on the bird's back.

Do you get them in your own garden? They're especially fond of peanuts.

The defocussed background looks great and complements the feeder and the nuthatch beautifully. I seem to see a range of colours for this bird, from brown to bright blue. Yours seems to be inbetween. Do the males and females differ or are there regional variations?

They're a sort of greyish blue on top and orangey-brown underneath. That second one shows the dividing line of the blue/grey on the back very nicely. They strike you as a boring grey initially until you notice the blue tinges when they move around.

I can't give you an informed, definite answer regarding the difference between the male and female. I think the female may be slightly lighter and it also depends on their state of moulting, ambient light and so on but I'm really not sure.

Mick Johnson may be able to help on that one as he has infinitely more in-depth knowledge about birds than I'm ever likely to acquire. I'm not really a spotter, I'm just a snapper. Mick has been both for many years.

Cue Mick (I hope) ... HELP!

Haven't had one yet I'm sorry to say.
I often look in to MJ's gallery and have it in my favourites. Just can't help looking at the kingfishers

Thank's Pol, putting me under pressure.

I thought they were the same but I've just looked at my bird guide and 'the male has more intense red/brown colour on flanks' not my words.

Bet you would'nt know though unless they were both together and even then, like you say, they may vary anyway.

Soz for the pressure but thanks for the info, which I just knew you'd be able to provide.

We had a pair coming and going last year, well at least 2 at the same time and on the same feeders, but I never managed to get a decent shot to compare them. Neither of us could discern any difference between them but we just assumed they must be a pair as they often came together.

I suppose there must be a nest not too far away as there lots of trees, wooded areas and a forest nearby.
