  • Kingfisher

Have been photographing this Kingfisher at the nestsite for a while now and this is one of my favourite shot's.

It's just dunked itself in the river as they always do every time they come out of the nest burrow. If you looked at, and up the burrow, you would know why.

Anyway it's shaking the water off itself.

It was taken at 1/50 sec

Fantastic shot! I love the way you've managed to capture the firm feet with the 'spinning' head above. The spray from the shaking is also brilliant. Definitely 10/10 for this one!

So d'ya need a gas mask if you're within half a mile of the burrow or just a giant umbrella? Do they regurgitate on you and yer kit?

I love this shot as well, apparently the borrow is lines with fish bones so it will be quite smelly.

I think they regurgitate pellets of fish bones and other bits they can't digest.

I've never seen one but it I imagine it must be quite 'high'.

Even more kudos and respect to Mick for the huge effort and time he spends getting these shots.

Do you have a picture of it just standing there on it's own Mick?

Here's a link to Mick's own website gallery. You'll find several Kingfisher photos on there.

Mick holds a special licence for certain types of photography, ie protected species and he usually does this sort of stuff on private land by special arrangement.

I can't remember all the details but the licences are only granted to carefully vetted individuals with a known reputation for their knowledge of the species, regard for their habitat and skills as a photographer.

Is that about right, Mick? I've forgotten all the details in the blurb.

It's certainly smelly when you get close up. The burrow is dug slightly uphill to let all the cr*p run down and out.

... which is a fine example of how some birds aren't so much bird-brained as bird-drained.

Well that was worth the effort, what outstanding kingfisher shots. Such a beautiful bird. Top class photography here. Oh yes, the one above shaking its feathers is another stunner. Excellent Mick.
