  • A Different Kind of Bird!!!

So there I was a few days ago with an unexpected day off work. Great I thought, nice day, grab the camera and go off somewhere.

As I was thinking where to go I spotted an aeroplane flying quite low over my house. Nice plane I thought as I watched it go by and this gave me the spur of the moment idea to get all my kit, jump in the car and head off up the road for the short drive up to Gatwick Airport to take some pictures close up of aeroplanes, something I have only ever done once at an airshow.

Upon arrival I drove around the perimeter road and spotted an airport security land rover parked up next to some big metal gates more or less right at the end of the runway. I pulled over and asked the guy where the safest place would be to park for an hour to take a few pics. He explained where to park and I drove up around to where he said. As I got out he car and started walking along back to where I was he pulled up and offered me a lift which I thought was decent of him. (10-15 min walk otherwise)

On the short ride around he told me the do-s and don'ts and was quite friendly overall. He dropped me off and I took a load of pics. Here are some of the better ones
Impressive flaps on a 747 ready for take off...

Rear view of the same plane, something different you don't see every day!

    Nice profile pic......

    Needs a clean!!

Another rear view but of an Airbus A330

    Nice engine reflection....

Some detail around the wing/engine/undercarriage of an Easyjet A319

    Air Transat A310 Detail......

A nice one to end with..........

Re: A Different Kind of Bird

I so love watching airliners - in fact any sort of plane, to be honest, but especially airliners. They have such a sense of purpose, setting out on the start of a journey which could be just a few hundred miles or over a third of a way around the globe, and to what fascinating, mysterious, destination? Leaving the cold and dreary local climate to arrive in the bright warmth and sunshine - hopefully.

I've flown Virgin 747s from Gatwick regularly to travel to PMA in Orlando and Las Vegas in recent years!
