  • Macro shots

I've had a Tamron 90mm macro lens for a few months, but there wasn't much that inspired me over the winter months - I like to take outdoor shots, and to practice my macro, insects were my preferred choice. Now the weather's warmed up, there are plenty around and I've been practicing hard!

I'm quite pleased with the way some of the shots have turned out. They're not technically perfect, but they're better than any macro shots I've managed to achieve before. They're not the most exciting subjects I suppose, but I like the way that the macro shots maybe cause people to look at these insects more closely than they have before. For instance, I swear that in the second picture, that damselfly's glaring at me!

I like these a lot. You will need to stop down more to get more depth of field - the first one is pretty wide open at f/4.5. At f/11, or f/16, light will be a problem, so you may need to experiment with flash or a higher ISO setting.

Lovely colours and the last one is really good

Thanks for the comments everyone. I wasn't sure about the last one, as the insect's head is in shadow, but that seems to be the most popular one.

Thanks for the advice. With the fly, I definitely wished I'd used f/11 or roundabouts, but I find that, at that proximity, there's very little DOF anyway, no matter what the aperture is.

With the damselfly, I intended to use a shallow DOF, I thought his/her expression looked quite comical and wanted to just isolate the head! But on reflection, perhaps it looks a little strange.

I've also experimented with using flash. I've found that it brings out incredible detail in the eyes of flies, but that the colours don't seem as 'rich' - perhaps this is something that I could sort out in Photoshop afterwards though?
