  • Wombat-out of the ashes

A couple of weekends ago, we went for a drive to country Victoria, (near Melbourne) which in February experienced devastating bushfires! The small town of Marysville was almost wiped out...gutted by fire! Approximately 203 people lost their lives! This wombat, usually a nocturnal animal was foraging by the roadside near Marysville, in the daytime! He was quite badly singed & burnt! All around his eyes & ears seemed quite badly affected! He's a wild wombat, yet he didn't run away when we approached him! Quite opposite, he came right up to us, sniffing at our shoes & eating out our hands! Only when 2 other people came to photograph him, did he hive back off to the bushes!

He didn't like being stroked at all Pops! He shook himself as though it tickled.....or like some animals do when bothered by pesky flies! I unfortunately had all the wrong settings on my camera as usual when an unexpected opportunity arises! Polarizing filter on & unable to get focus & settings sorted before he moved away! I'm lucky to have at least got one pic that was okay I guess! Thanks Pops for your comment!

Hi Jocelyn, I meant to comment on your wombat earlier. As I was born in Australia, and despite the fact that I haven't been back since I was a toddler, I am very interested in Aussie news, especially like this.

When you get caught short like that Jocelyn have you thought about just flicking to Auto then, when you know you have 1 shot secure, you can spend a bit of time with other adjustments hoping that the subject doesn't do a runner.
