Sorry I know I have not been posting anything of late. Here are two that I put into club last week under the thyme of contrast. The chess set placed 4th the cards did nothing. Oh well you cannot win them all. Oh almost forgot to add the chess set is not a full size one but one of those small travel sets. I also had to clone letters and numbers off of it.

      Hi Josh

Pleased you like it. The lighting was nothing fancy. I just used my 580 flash set to half power and bounced off the ceiling. The camera was also handheld. Most say somebody at club said it was nice and sharp as well.

I once spent a whole afternoon trying to get the persective right with a chessboard and failed miserably.

          Hi Pops

This photo of the chess board was one from the first set I took. I almost did not go with this one as I wanted to call the photo check mate but was told this was not a check mate set up. I then tried again withe the correct set set up for check mate but was just not happy with what I was getting. I really liked the lines from the front to back on this set up so just went with it in the end. I also had the idea of a chess set as soon as I saw contrast was going to be one of the competitions this year it just seem to fit for me.

Well done Peter. They are both excellent images.

About 3 years ago I won the raffle at our club and there was a chess set as a prize. I chose this, as I wanted to take photos of it. I still have never done it!

            The cards are super sharp.

A very good selection for contrast.

              Hello Peter,

Two superb images, the simplicity, colour and crisp lines make both shots worthy of a canvas or acrylic print.

              Well done.

                Peter,
i like the card shot. retry it. make it a poker hand, a straight and all spades except one heart. make the heart second from the right. lay cards out as before.
                title " straight blush"
titles are important in competition and add to the initial impact.
                impact is everything...

I agree with all the other comments too Peter (can't comment on the Poker hand suggestion though!) The solid black background is incredible - what did you use?

i was trained as a print juror of professional photography (PPA). they announce the title of the print before presenting it for judging. the title becomes part of the initial impact that effects the final score. maybe it's not a good idea for me to get involved with critiques. sorry.

                        Hi kennykodak

I know what you are saying about how a title can add so much to a photo but the way we do it at our local club is to just show the photos first then later when they are put up for critique the title is then given. The reason for this is so the photo wins or not for what it is and how on subject it is not because somebody gave it a witty title. I did not maybe put that across right in my last post so do not take it the wrong way.

Oh I think you should John. The critique forum is exactly the place for someone with your experience to offer their input. I think most people would value that.
