I managed to get around to it at last and although I seem to be getting there I still have a way to go. Unfortunately it wasn't until I got back in the house that I realised the ISO had been set on auto so hopefully next time will be better.
Yay! They're looking pretty good from where I'm sitting! Your background look great too - pure black.
You have some good swirls and curls there, some of them clean and sharp too. I had lots that came out similar to those. I just kept on going until I had a few that seemed better, clearer and cleaner that the others so those were the ones I kept, inverted then coloured.
Yours look fine with their ISO 400, though I can undestand why you want to have another go with it lowered. I had everything manual, including the ISO.
I think my best ones were the ones where I was using 2 joss sticks. One shorter and one longer so that there was always a neat/clean column passing across the frame. No doubt you'll know exactly what I mean now that you've tried it.
Fun though innit. I should have another go myself one day, when I can face the lingering pong of the incense
Unfortunately I haven't got any joss sticks yet. The warmer day today allowed me to go have a try and would you believe I used a candle.
I had to light the candle, focus by trial and error, blow out the candle. I then had enough smoke for around 3 or 4 shots. Anyway 2 boxes of matches later :-) I had enough shots to go back indoors and have a sort out.
Hopefully will get some tomorrow for the next attempt.

Your shots are excellent considering it was a candle and you had to focus by trial and error!
I got my own joss sticks from a bric-a-brac shop down at the beach. I was also lucky enough to find pack with a floral fragrance (roses) so they were less overpowering than than the regular sticks - nowt like roses though!
I stuck them in a block of Oasis. I lit the first one to get the smoke rising then I lit a second one, placed it with the flame in the column of smoke from the first one. The flame from the second one was what I used to prefocus. So the focus was on the flame, which was burning in the midde of the smoke from below.
Have you searched online for joss sticks? Amazon seem to have most things so you might get lucky there?
