  • Swaledale and Wensleydale Barns

One of the purposes of the little jaunt to the Dales last week was to try and get some shots of the barns that are very common in the area. They are an important part of rearing cattle in these valleys and along with the dry stone walls can make for attractive photos if you can get the sun on them in particular. Here are three shots, the first two in Swaledale and the third in Wensleydale

    Hello Stephen

What a joy to behold - I just love the colour.

Although you are not asking for critique, I would like to say I like the second one best, because of its portrait presentation showing just how many barns, buildings and walls you can show in one shot; topped with a wonderful sky. The black border is just a shade too heavy for my taste. I think if you tried the darkest colour in your photo for the border and compared the two, it would not seem so harsh against this wonderful landscape.

Having said that about the second picture, the brilliance and positioning of the buildings within the rolling landscape of the first one with the lit hills in the background takes a lot of beating - there is so much to see - one field leading into another like a picture book. And, of course the last one traditionally on the thirds and a wonderful greetings card it would make.

Congratulations on a wonderful set. Compared with the ones posted for critique recently, these give me a wonderful lift. (Of course I do understand that you achieved what you were after in the other set.)

For ten years we went to Swaledale on walking holidays for a week at New Year. Of course our photos were very different from these - more bleak and often with snow. That was pre digital though.

Hi Stephen - Lovely pictures and lovely countryside. They remind me of several happy holiday weeks that my wife and I have spent at a Field Study Centre at Giggleswick. I also one year had a weeks' painting holiday in Kettlewell which was held mainly in the the village hall where part of the film 'Calender Girls' was later filmed. Your pictures capture well the characteristics of this sheep farming area.

Number 3 (above) hits all the marks for me

A minor point - I find the black frame a bit too heavy, personally, and it emphasises some luminosity in the blacks that aren't perfectly dark.

          Glad you like it Ian.
I tend to use only a black or white border these days, and this black one is set up with an action, I think its personal choice once again, and I tend not to like colour keyed borders.

I'm not sure what you mean about luminosity in the blacks that are not perfectly black, can you explain this. The picture was processed in such a way so as to get the result you see. By comparison the original is a little more subdued and flatter

            Hi Stephen -

So much detail, history, colour and contrast. I like them all and number one has it all. Super series.

Stephen I saw these this morning but did not have time to leave feed back. I like the first one the best. The reason being I like the way the colours roll back up the hill. If it had not been for the tree on the right hand side it would have been no 2.
