Just my personal opinion but I think its always worth keeping your software up-to-date if you can possibly manage to do so. You can usually get away with missing out one or possibly two Photoshop upgrades but you need to be careful that you don't end up having to buy the full proggie again at some point in the future.
I know that some people have had problems with installations of CS2 with Vista. I had no problems installing CS3 with Vista, though I had to ring Adobe to activate it as I hadn't been able to deactivate it on my old PC because the HD had suddenly died without warning. It was the person I spoke to at Adobe who told me that some folks had been having problems CS2+ Vista installation problems.

I think you'd be very lucky if you could find anyone who was parting with their original CS software.
The serial number of an original programme is needed before an upgrade can installed and activated. Therefore if anyone parted with their CS, CS2 or CS3 disc they'd have to buy the full CS4 rather than just the upgrade.
The full programme costs a lot more than just the upgrade but you only need to buy the full programme once - then you just need to pay for the upgrades in future.
Good luck with your searches though. You may get lucky and find someone who has no further use for their original CS, CS2 or CS3 disc.

I hope that between us we can explore all the magic of CS4 for everyone here!

I'll be looking forward to that.
Does it ship with a free month's subscription to lynda.com, as CS3 did, or would that be just too much to hope for?

I don't know if my version (CS4 Web Premium) is the same as the retail packaged one (it came in a plain box) but there is two hours of video training on a separate DVD.Originally posted by Pol View PostI'll be looking forward to that.

The installation takes a LONG time and comes on two DVDs.
Stephen should have his Photoshop CS4 box today, so I'd be interested to hear if he has the same training DVD.

Re: Waiting for the storm
I've just had the email to let me know my CS4 upgrade has been dispatched. It's coming by special delivery so I have a tracking number. Ain't gonna risk having it lost or even nicked in the post y'see.
Hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow so you can assume I'm deeply geeking if I disappear for a while.
Wahey!

Re: Waiting for the storm
I've just finished installing the PS CS4 upgrade, which took 10-15 minutes to install. Two discs in the box - one disc with the programme and the other is a training disc.
Its different to CS3, to put it mildly!
I think I'm going to be on something of a learning curve for a while so I won't be deactivating and unistalling CS3 anytime soon!

I'm sure you're gonna like it much better than I do at the moment. It's very different to CS3.Originally posted by Stephen View PostJust installing my version now

I'm gettin' too old and set in my ways for all these changes y'know. I'm not gonna be beaten into submission by 'fix-it-even-tho-it-ain't-broken' Adobe software geeks though.
Good luck with yer installation. Mine installed without any problems.

I do know how you feel, Pol, but I feel that Adobe should have updated the user interface a long time ago.Originally posted by Pol View PostI'm sure you're gonna like it much better than I do at the moment. It's very different to CS3.

Re: Waiting for the storm
I don't mind the user interface so much now that I've finally found the eye dropper sampler and sussed how to zoom the image to the size I want to work with. I miss the familiar 'navigator' slider though.Originally posted by Ian View PostI do know how you feel, Pol, but I feel that Adobe should have updated the user interface a long time ago.

I'm also hoping there's going to be some way of using older actions. Those preset things are ok but I want to be able to have some actions available. I'm also missing the familiar history palette.
I've been collecting actions and filters for years and I'm gonna be cheesed off if I can't use them unless I maintain CS3. Mind you, I must admit I haven't looked at the training video yet. I'll probably keep an eye open for lynda.com tutorials too.
Been playing with it all for a couple of hours now and it's gradually getting more familiar.

Re: Waiting for the storm
Hi Ian,
I took a look at you picture and thought it might be a good subject for a technique that I have been playing with, to get better color depth, like we saw in slides. I took your non-HDR version, lowered the saturation globally and then increased the saturation through a tonal mask, so that as the tones got darker, the color depth increased. I also did a highlight mask to tone down the highlights a bit. I am, in effect, increasing the image contrast along the way, too. I hope this translates Ok onto your site. This could be a useful tool at times.

My own feeling is that with a few adjustments of the sliders in LR, a better result can be achieved, and more easily. Its all subjective but that's my opinion
