  • Technical Knowledge or Right place right time?

There's no doubt that if you are into photography, at some point you have thought just this! As I have many times when viewing a photograph.

This was taken about 4 years ago, just when I was starting to get my teeth into photography and had the urge and real passion to prove myself, shooting pretty much anything and everything I came into contact with

Ok, so why have I posted this image now you might ask! Well many of you on this forum today will not have seen it before, so to you its new, and the others on the forum that have seen it will hopefully agree with myself in saying its a good photograph that could have been taken yesterday or 4 years ago.
There's no doubt that you can improve to an outstanding level in your field but if the image does not present itself then you won't have an image

Im sure I could go back to this same place and viewpoint, but I guess I would be waiting a very long time before the light and sky was as good as in this image, which clearly makes the shot.

I no its difficult but I always try and think of an interesting way of presenting an image whether it be a story or a reason why you took the shot, it makes for a better read than just 'took this the other day what do ya think' kinda thing.

I posted this image as it still remains one of my favourites and best photographs even though 4 years ago I did not really no what I was doing and only took the shot because I thought it looked nice.

    Everybody's view welcome.
Please post some of your own early images to the thread and give your reasons why you like them, hopefully with your help we can get an intresting post going here!

    cheers
    Ash.

This is one of my early efforts. I hesitate to mention the year it was taken but the shot just seemed to capture the moment.

I agree Ash. I have been looking through a lot of my old photos recently, particularly those taken in Thailand.

Since having Lightroom, I am enjoying 'improving' them without actually destroying them.

This photo is one I took last year. The original colour is in my gallery, but I couldn't help but try to convert it, because as you can see, I think we must have been standing in the same place to take the photo, and I was also fortunate in having a day with a good sky.

I can see the part of the castle on the right could be in better focus and my conversion skills from colour to black and white certainly need honing. However, I just thought it was funny that they were so similar but mine was taken a couple of years or so after yours. Also the grass had been cut for your pic.

What a lovely natural shot Gez. Definitely a keeper. You can't set up for a picture like that, it is a one off.

Here is another early shot taken on the same steps. The girl is trying to get away from the camera but I manage a shot.

Nice couple of shots gez, am I right in thinking that your of a more 'mature' age than myself and yes prabably more ways than one
The little van gives it away a bit!

I find kids very difficult to photograph but very rewarding when you get that all important action shot.
I love b&w, especially old b&w shots that show proper old scenes.
            thanks for contributing.

              Wow now that is spooky!
Like you say, pretty much the same spot too.
Im no expert at photo manipulation but be careful when you try to bring out detail from the shadows especially from a jpeg.
On the day we was there, there was an open day and lots of people dressed up in the old rags. If I remember I think it was free too, Thomas was still a baby so I did not have to run around after him all day which gave me lots of time for pictures

              Thanks for contributing.
              Ash.

Here's another one from that day, ive looked at the exif and it was middle of sept 2004. Taken with a minolta A2.

Just for you Ash. One of my first efforts which is over fifty years old. Taken with a Brownie 127 camera when I was a mere lad.

                    Here's one from me Ash.

This is the first photo I very nervously posted on the forum almost two years ago. It was taken with a compact, a Sony Cybershot, in full auto mode and it still remains one of my favourite shots. I think this image was the catalyst that really spurned my passion for photography and I went out to buy my first (and current) DSLR, a secondhand 30D only weeks later. I would like to think that my knowledge and ability has steadily progressed, and even when I don't have the camera in my hands I am constantly looking for ways to learn and improve upon my photography/image making.

Yes it is a very eye catching photo Jojo. It is amazing what we can do with a compact.

The reason I left pro photography was because I can not find the reason to take photographs except relating to money. Since then I shot anything and everything, as an amateur we answer to no but ourselves, I guess we're all very selfish....and very lucky to be able to do just this

I spend most of my time these days producing boring test shots - which is very frustrating. It's very nice to occasionally have the freedom and the subject to satisfy the desire to take pictures for one's self.

An interesting thread Ash and looking back this is the image that spurred me into taking photography as a hobby more seriously, not a fantastic image by any means i liked it at the time and still do. I had seen the bird in the same spot a week before so i waited for a few hours every morning until he returned. It was the first photography target i had set myself so i was chuffed when it came together.
