  • Inside the Orchid

I dusted off my micro nikkor 60mm lens this afternoon and could'nt resist taking this in my studio (the bay window)
iso 100, f40 for 1.6sec and an led torch and the essential tripod!

        Hi Ash

Well taken shot, but overexposed I would say by about a stop.

            i agree, awesome capture.

My missus will love this shot when I show her, she is a huge orchid fan. (we have them all over the place at home!)

Great shot Ash but as someone else said, a tad over exposed!

                Re: Inside the Orchid

hmmm, fail to see what, other than the background, is over exposed?

did you try other apertures ash? i'd be interested to see a shallower DoF with the rearmost petals just slightly out of focus.

i'm not convinced that white petals and a white backdrop are complimentary. the pure white of the backdrop makes the petals look grubby. one of those things that you don't know how it'll look until it's been tried i guess (bit like the model shoot i did yesterday).

having said all that, the important details are pin sharp and vivid.

Hi Dave thanks for your input, I did try a few different takes on the shot as you do with this type of photography, you have lots of time which is a bonus. The petals out of focus did not really work on this one as it also thru out some of the important nectar (centre) of the shot.
I thought the overexposed lower right added to the shot as it highlighted an important part of the flower then sending the eye back into the even more interesting bit.
It is a hard flower to capture as its very deep, and being so close I suppose you have to accept what the lens can cope with.
I hope this explains a little more about the shot.
                  cheers
                  Ash
