  • Quiet day in the Fruit Market.

I thought that it was about time I submitted a pic to the forums, but I have not done much photography of late. A few weeks ago we went 'oop North' to a 90th birthday celebration in the town of my birth, which we have not visited for many years and wandering around the town to see how things had changed I took several pics and whilst in the local market I thought I would try some casual people shots. This is just one of them.

It looks just like our local fruit markets....except there aren't any Asian greengrocers...or exotic fruit stalls!!

No Jocelyn - when I was there forty odd years ago it was the Italians who ran all the fruit & veg shops/stalls and the Greeks who controlled all the fish stalls, if I remember correctly.

Apparantly 40 years ago & maybe less, there was a huge wave of Italian & Greek immigrants to Australia, bringing their cuisine (thank goodness) to Australia! Then in the past 10 to 20 years, there has been an influx of Asian immigrants, also bringing their cuisine....yummmmmy! In the past 5 to 10 years, there has been an influx of African refugees & immigrants, many from Somalia etc in the North, Nigerians, Zimbabweans, Kenyans & of course.....South Africans! This gives us a great cosmopolitan co existence & sharing of traditional cuisines etc! There are still quite a good many Italians & Greeks that have market stalls as there are in many countries.....they really are great tradespeople...but there are many Asian.....Malaysian, Indonesian & lots of Chinese grocers! I love the fact that it produces such fantastic opportunities of choice in cullinary or epicurean delights!
