  • Jolly Boys (and Girls) Outing to Lake District

I'm going to get the group shot out of the way first, so here it is and processed to give something of a feel for the conditions

There will be more to follow later, but just let me introduce the group.

From the left is Me, then Julia followed by Ian, and finally Mal and Andrew.
Mal will be new to regulars here, but I can assure you all he is a fine chap and IMO a great photographer, he was invited along as a guest but I'd also like to welcome him as a member of the forum, I hope he will pop in from time to time and even contribute with a few of his better snaps I'd encourage you to have a look at some of his work in his galleries on the Onexposure site

OK well introductions over, I'm sure we will all be posting a shot or two from the trip. We all met up in Keswick where we had checked into a local hotel. This gave us the opportunity to get some early morning and evening shots on Thursday, and we photographed at several locations throughout the day. Thanks again to Mal for driving us round during what my wife generally refers to as, The Jolly Boys Outing when I go on one of these jaunts

I just love group shots. It's great to put faces to text. Glad you had a good day and I look forward to seeing more shots. I like the effect with the desaturated background.

Nice to see the group and the general conditions .... but even nicer looking through all those wonderful shots in Mal's OE gallery! Fabulous work! A very warm welcome to the forum, Mal.

Even though the forecast was not good for Thursday morning, the Lake District can be very changeable so we all made a pact to meet at 6am for an early morning shoot. Our hopes were never really fulfilled weatherwise for the Dawn shoot, but we drove up to Watendlath and took some shots anyway. Then back for breakfast and away again this time to the Thirlmere area. This is a shot looking South from the head of the lake. The lake was mirror like and just cried out to be photographed.

I spent some of the time photographing the others You'll really get to know them!

An excellent time was had by all, despite generally difficult lighting conditions for photography (very flat, overcast skies).

I was rather caught out as my tripods are either monstrous studio things or too old or too small. The Manfrotto 055 Pro that Stephen and Andrew were using looks good - may have to do a tripod group test

The weather was not a total wash out as you will see, and when we moved South the sun did appear.

I promised myself at least one panorama and the opportunity presented itself when we visited Blea Tarn between Great and Little Langdale. It holds certain memories from my youth for me as it was my first real experience of camping and climbing in the Lake District. You can see the Langdale Pikes in the distance partially covered in cloud. The picture is 1600 pixels wide so to keep the thread structure normal I have posted the thumbnail

Magnificent Stephen! This is what I mean by saying a lot of your photos include so many planes, which produce an amazing effect! It creates such a richness & volume! It is a photo that pulls you back & back again to find all its nuances! Great reflections, atmosphere & composition! The lake certainly was like glass & it looks freezing cold!

Had a great time in the lakes. Heres one of a Hercules buzzing us while we where at the lake side.
