  • A poser for Pops....

Ok, this wasn't taken in my backyard - but only about 11 miles away, at Daventry Country Park at the weekend

This bird was in the middle of a bunch of mallards, goosanders, tufted ducks and seagulls - any ideas please?

There have been various suggestions on the flickr board I put it on... from a hybrid, to a mutation to a mixture of a domesticated duck and mallard...

Your best bet would be to register then ask at birdforum.net - HERE.

Chances are someone will give you an accurate and very well informed answer within a few minutes. What they don't know in there ain't worth knowing!

BTW - they're also very clued up about insects.

Looks like a mutation to me. I just checked in my extensive Illustrated book of birds, and cant see anything in there.

Thanks for the suggestions - I've come to the conclusion that it's a hybrid of some sort.

And thanks Pol - I'd forgotten I'd registered some time ago at the Bird Forum... just got to see now if I can remember my log in!

This is a smaller pic, with a mallard in the background (taken from my flickr folder - sorry, I haven't bothered to upload it in here):

Thanks for all your help.... I went off to the bird forum and they'd solved it within minutes.

It's a cross between a mallard and a crested duck - after they'd identified it, I went off and googled an image:

So cheers, and thanks for the help
