They are both better than any of my efforts! but I agree the top one is the sharper and better of the two imo.

Yep. I would concur the first is better (sharper, more "resolution")

      best regards

I think this latest shot is great Ian, the converging lines and texture (particularly that at the bottom section) remind me of a peeled orange. I couldn't display the exif data - please can you say what settings/focal length you used.

Thanks Jo - this is ISO 100, 1/100th @ f7.1, using a 90-250mm zoom (that's 180-500 in 35mm speak) with a 1.4x converter, making it a 700mm effective tele. There were no burned out highlights, but in the RAW conversion I reduced the exposure by one stop and fiddled to increase contrast and sharpness. The white balance was also adjusted to make it warmer.

I used my biggest tripod and used anti-shake (mirror gets flipped up a few seconds before the shutter opens to ensure extra stability). Live view on the Olympus E-3 was a big bonus as a) I didn't have to crane my next to look through the finder and b) the critical focus on the screen, with a 7x magnifaction, meant the focus was spot on.

I'd agree about using a 1.4x. You only loose 1 stop. The Canon one I have is excellent, but again only works with certain lenses. You must also be careful as when you effectively have a widest aperture of f8, (ie. lens at f5.6 becomes f8 with converter on) focusing is not reliable

The Olympus Digital Zuiko EC-14 converter works on any ZD lens - there is no restriction, but but it is optically matched to certain lenses.

You make a good point about the AF reliability with slow lenses plus a converter, but I've found it needn't be a problem if the light is good (outdoors on a sunny day, for example).
