  • A funny question? - but so so serious

I'm now starting to regret that I took the pic (the left one) only for fun. (No raw file and the smallest JPEG file only) as I intended to use this for another thread ("Viva photog - part2,3" that I posted a few days ago) for reference purpose.

with shutter speed 1/13th and handheld it should have camera blur. Surprised with the slow shutter, I changed ISO and with flash on, took it once more (the right side). The second one looks like no camera shake thanks to the shutter speed 1/200th. but exposure is not good as is often the case when flash is used.

Question: Do you think I should regret more (for the first pic) for not spending due time to take it seriously? (i.e. say, with tripod )- or no need at all to do so?

While having a look at it many times, I can not judge it for myself, I'm afraid.- just getting more confused.

p.s. Original intention of taking the pix was to use this for comparison purposes among dslr/film slr cameramen and painters at that earlier thread but did not do so. - there are some more "painters" pix taken for the same purposes.

p.s.2 While repeating resizing, the exif letters etc became fuzzy but let me allow the posting.

Hi Yoshi - I definitely prefer the left one - it looks more natural. The one on the right looks more like a holiday snap using a compact camera.

I'd agree, the problem for me is that you have let the flash take over, which program mode were you using. I would guess that 1/200 is to fast for the ambient light conditions and therefore the flash burst is supplying too much illumination, hope that makes sense

        Hi Yoshi,

I am really not keen on the one with the flash.

A little tip (not that you probably need them) is to just rest the camera on a log or something nearby, and use the cameras timer next time, rather than use flash.

          Yoshi,
I prefer the left one also. If I were you I would try to go back to that location and do some practice shots, just try every setting that will produce an acceptable picture. You may not need to do that, but to me just being able to get out to take pictures is fun!

            Hi Yoshi,
Yes I also prefer the left image, it has more saturation and is more natural, you should always try to carry a tripod, even if only a small light one, I for one and I suspect others have fallen into this trap many times. It already been said, but try to avoid flash if possible, but if you do have to, use only fill flash. non the less it is a nice image composition.
