  • Bay of Naples Panorama

Apologies for the length of this panorama and having to scroll horizontally, but much shorter and it becomes too small.

The shot was taken from the path towards the top of Mt Vesuvius overlooking the [ame="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=Naple s,italy&ie=UTF8&ll=40.709792,14.350891&spn=0.44033 7,1.082153&z=11&om=1"]Bay of Naples[/ame]
Its not the best panorama but its interest value is worth doing it imo. Naples in on the right and you can see the Sorrento peninsula on the left with Capri the island at the end of it. The larger Isle of Ischia is on the right, partially shrouded in the mist/haze. We stayed in Sorrento for a week back at the end of September, seems like an age away now

    Absolutely beautiful Stephen!

    I love it.

Just one thing, and I know this hasnt been put in the 'critique' section, but I would have been inclined to crop out a portion on the left with the people to balance the shot with the right. Did you consider this at all, or was the people left in on purpose to give the picture a sense of scale?

I don't agree about cloning out the people or the path! Sorry.

That's the part of the pano that brings it all to life for me. It's the part that enables me to feel as though I was actually there - the part that makes me feel 'included'. It enables me to get an all round feeling for the environment.

Yes, definitely left the people in on purpose, as you say it gives a sense of scale, and also shows the path and route I was taking at the time. Glad you both like it. Will show some more shots when I get them sorted out

            Yes Stephen,
A super image and it does alow the viewer to get a sense of the place, and I also feel that the people should stay in.

This is a very nice panorama Stephen. Did you use a panorama head on your tripod? Ive been reading that to get a perfect alignment the camera should be rotated on the front lens axis rather that the film/censor plain. What's your opinion on this method? Dose it make that much difference? Your shot looks just about perfect.

I took some shots for a vaguely similar panorama looking down on the Seve Lakes region of norther Italy during the Sony Alpha A700 launch event there (nearly killed me getting to the top )

But I didn't bother stitching it as it was so hazy - but I'll have a go now as yours - though hazy too - has worked quite well

                    Re: Bay of Naples Panorama

Thanks for the info Stephen. I have seen the gadget on the web and to be honest thought I'd have a go at making one. I have the use of a full engineering shop (my farther-in-law's) so was kean to get started. Did not know there was special software needed to use one. I've had some very good results with Panasonic's panorama software and intended to use that. Now I'm wondering is it worth the effort.

Your software may well do the job Ron, for regular panoramas, I think the stuff I refer to was for doing 360's and creating these so called virtual worlds

Well-executed pano. As a large format print this would look incredible in a corporate or public environment where people could spend time absorbing the detail and momentarily escaping the "here and now".

Personally I would have hoped to have achieved a clearer result with less atmospheric haze/pollution if I was to produce a panorama for the purpose you describe. A nice thought though

I am not so sure to be honest Stephen, I actually quite like a little haze. In my opinion, it adds a little atmosphere, and gives a greater sense of distance.

Your shot here gave me a great deal of inspiration, and I hope you dont mind, but I will be posting a panoramic shot today I took at Richmond

I would agree with Tim. For me a lot of the enjoyment in this sort of image, is trying to see more than there is to see, if you know what I mean. I like it as is. Would love to see a full size poster type version.
