  • Fire! Fire!

A week or so ago, there was a thunderous explosion outside our house & all the lights went out, whilst we were feverishly trying to complete painting a wall! On investigation, an oversized vehicle had pulled the power lines down opposite our house! The telegraph pole had caught alight & exploded! Unfortunately, I didn't capture that on camera as it was spectacular & quite scary when a second explosion occured shortly afterwards, sending everyone scurrying!

Scary stuff! In the UK most of our electric supply cabling is underground.

It looks like the smoke has been illuminated by your camera's flash, making an interesting swirly ghost effect

Yes capturing the smoke in the flash is what actually makes it look more interesting! Laying the cables underground would be a far better choice, as its the 2nd time these cables have been pulled down in the last year by oversized trucks bringing huge airconditioning units etc to the hospital across the road!

A super Reportage capture, certainly looks dramatic and must have been frightning, you have certainly captured the atmosphere with the lighting and smoke etc:

Well captured Jocelyn - probably quite a frightening experience.

And when you get out in the countryside, a lot of it is still overhead. There's been quite a lot on local radio in the last week about someone stealing several hundred metres of LIVE wire with 11000 volts passing through it - it is thought the thief could be suffering severe burns. Someone came on from central network (the electricity cabling company) and said that they quite often find charred bodies where people have tried to steal live wire for the copper. They did mention a figure, but I forget, sorry.

In South Africa they had a huge problem with people pinching the cabling for the copper as well! You would think the that the companies that buy the scrap copper would think twice before doing the deal huh!

You certainly caught that smoke well, add reality to the image.

Don't your trucker's bosses check out routes of high loads beforehand.
The route of any abnormal load here is gone over most thoroughly before the journey starts.

The driver said Vic Roads & council did go over the route beforehand & mapped out etc! I think what they don't take into account is that the entrance to hospital is on an incline & they probably measure at main road level where its flat!! It took down my cable TV wire as well, so was without that for a week! Oh & without electricity for 8 hrs....had to paint by candlelight!>
